| Congratulations to the UBC BMS Class of 2020! 🎉🎓 On Wednesday, June 17, we held our first virtual graduation ceremony to celebrate this year's UBC BMS graduates! To further celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, we also established a spotlight page on our website where some of our graduates shared what the importance of Media Studies is, what they will take from the program, one of their best memories of being in BMS, and a favourite project they’ve created! Get Active at Home | | | | ASTU 400G: Fandom and Fanworks in the Age of the Internet Offered in 20W Term Two This course surveys current internet fan culture, analyzing fanart, fan fiction, fan videos, cosplay, and online fan spaces in the context of gender studies, critical theory, queer theory, sociology, and other critical discourses. Registration Information | | | DMED 503: Foundations of Game Design Offered in 20W Term One This course explores game design from both a theoretical and applied standpoint. Students will explore the various aspects of games – from “indie” to “triple A” titles - including mechanics, emotion, agency, balance, motivation and the process of making games (plan, build, test and repeat!). Registration Information | | | ENGL 245: Comics and Graphic Media Offered in 20W Term Two In this course, students will survey key texts in emerging canons of graphic media—hybrids and mixtures of comics, illustrated texts, cartoons, graphic novels, graffiti, visual media and other genres—with an eye to establishing our own workable critical reading practices. Registration Information | | | | FIPR 469A: Special Projects Offered in 20W Term Two This course offers an introduction to the techniques and practice of video production within the context of cultural and community stories/issues. Students will work in groups to produce short fiction or documentary films examining these stories and issues. Registration Information | | | ACAM 250: Asian Canadians in Popular Culture Offered in 20W Term One This course examines popular culture as a site in and through which Asian Canadian identities and collectivities are produced. The depiction of Asian Canadians in diverse realms of popular culture created by Asian Canadians themselves, will be used as an entry point into our examination. Registration Information | | | JRNL 400: Feminist Postcolonial Critique and Journalism in a Digital Age Offered in 20W Term One This course will look at feminist and postcolonial critiques related to professional norms and practices of journalists, examining underlying democratic ideals in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
