THE COLE HARBOUR—DARTMOUTH REPORT

Navigating Hurricane Season

Dear Cole Harbour—Dartmouth Residents,

I write this note to you during Hurricane Lee and can't help wondering if severe weather and hurricanes will be the norm and expected more frequently in the future.

This uncertainty around weather events is why I have long felt strongly about emergency preparedness and timely responses, in particular to those most vulnerable during emergencies.

As a means to protect and provide comfort to all Nova Scotians, I remain hopeful the Province will support my Private Member's Bill to establish a voluntary Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR).

Once established, Nova Scotians with mobility issues will be contacted and checked on during emergencies to ensure they are well and safe. No one should feel alone and worried they will not be removed from danger during an emergency.

Staying Prepared Amid Tropical Weather

As we enter the peak of hurricane season, the importance of readiness cannot be overstated. While the province is launching an awareness campaign aimed at providing advice and information to aid residents in safeguarding themselves and their properties, it's crucial to recognize that the responsibility to prepare ultimately rests with each individual and family.

The powerful winds, heavy rain, and potential devastation associated with hurricanes underscore the significance of proactive measures.

To best equip ourselves for such scenarios, having an emergency kit prepared, developing, and reviewing a family emergency plan, and securing your property are just some of the top ways to get prepared.

Community Spotlight

George and Donna Kuhn of Cole Harbour

It was a true honour to recognize George and Donna Kuhn in the NS Legislature for their many years of volunteer service and presenting Donna with a copy of the Member Statement I read in the house.

I first met Donna years ago when she led the Christopher Leadership Course I took to improve my public speaking. It was very fitting for me to now speak publicly of all her great work. Well deserved, Donna and George (who was not home when I stopped by).

Both George and Donna volunteer for the Feed Others of Dartmouth program "'Margaret's House" by purchasing and delivering weekly groceries and serving meals. They coordinated "Coats for the Cold", collecting and delivering coats to Margaret House to donate to those in need. As a couple, they volunteered for many St. James fundraising programs; the Annual Lobster Suppers, the UCW and the Annual Christmas Tea and Sale.

George and Donna Kuhn are truly community minded people who have always gone the extra mile.
