Glow with the Flow Highlight Thank you to everyone who attended Glow with the Flow and special shoutout to our yoga teacher Josée and DJ John for hosting an unforgettable event! We had an amazing turnout of over 200 people! R100 Highlights Three months into the challenge, with 50 workouts we have Evan Scott, Andreas Clark, Ress Nguyen, Arjun Kapur, Matais Aalhus, Tate Bond, Brianna Falk, Dallas Hancox, Hellen Luvizetti Lacava, and Avaneedra Sathivada. Evan Scott also hit 76 workouts, making him in the lead. It's not too late to register for the challenge and complete 100 workouts before April! Register COVID-19 Update: - All individuals will be required to show their BC or Federal Vaccine Card upon each entry to the facility; with your consent, we have the ability to store your vaccination status in our facility check-in software. | Intramurals There will be 2 seasons of Intramurals running during term 2: Keep an eye out for some fun new additions to intramurals this winter, including curling and cricket. Old favorites like volleyball, basketball, and futsal (indoor soccer) will also be returning for term 2 leagues. Learn More | | Open Gym Whenever the gym is not booked for a particular activity, the gym is considered “open” for drop-in sports. Participation in Open Gym requires an active facility membership. Gym schedules are subject to change without notice, though we do our best to keep the online gym schedule as up to date as possible. Gym Schedule | | Group Fitness Classes are operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must have an active Membership or purchase a Day Pass ($5 for students) to attend classes. Group Fitness Schedule | | Fitness Instructor Highlight Senja is a new addition to our yoga teachers this year! She strongly believes in using yoga and mindfulness as tools for reducing stress and managing anxiety. Senja's practices focus on meditation and connecting the breath with movement. In all her classes she strives to cultivate a safe, relaxing environment where students can feel comfortable challenging themselves. Senja's Classes: Flow Yoga on Mondays from 6:30-7:30pm. | | Personal Training Corner Stuart is one of our personal trainers and group fitness instructors! Stuart has many years of experience in the gym and is your guy if you want an individualized training program. When he isn't teaching or in the gym you can find him hiking, kayaking, or doing mixed martial arts! Stuart also teaches group fitness classes! Try Lower Body Strength on Mondays from 12:00-1:00pm & Lower Body Strength on Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00pm. Recreation, Indigenous Programs & Services, and the Global Engagement Office, together with SUO Clubs and community partners are teaming up to offer a series of cultural sport events that welcome students to participate in and learn about intercultural sports. Date: November 29-December 2 Register | Traditional Indigenous Games: Intercultural Sport Series Join Nick, UBC Okanagan alumnus, and the Okanagan Nation Alliance Traditional Game Coordinator as he leads traditional Indigenous games. Find out how traditional games were an integral part of ancestral ways of life. Students will learn the history, values and purposes of the games. There will be a double ball stick game on Nonis Field followed by light snacks and hot chocolate in the Indigenous Centre. Date: Monday, November 29 Time: 3:00-5:00pm Location: Nonis Field Cost: $5 Register | | Basketball: Intercultural Sport Series Join in teams of three for a 3 on 3 basketball game night with the Filipino Student Association scorekeeping the games and Heat Varsity Basketball players officiating. Games will be focused on playing for fun. There will be a maximum of 12 teams with games being 15 minutes long. Date: Wednesday, December 1 Time: 8:00-10:00pm Location: Gymnasium Cost: $5 - fees are donated to the Filipino Student Association Register | | Latin Dance: Intercultural Sport Series Join Viviana, professional dancer and instructor and the Latin America Students’ Organization (LASO) as they lead Latin Dance classes. They teach salsa, bachata, chachacha, son, among other Latin rhythms. No experience or partner required. Sport shoes recommended. Date: Thursday, December 2 Time: 10:00am-1:00pm Location: UNC 233 UBCycles | | Exam Jam Yoga Relieve stress and harness your focus during this 1-hour yoga session guided by Christine. The class includes all necessary rental equipment (harness, shoes, rope, belay devices), and is taught by certified climbing instructors. Participants must be able to climb a grade of 5.9 or higher, be competent at top rope belaying, and have taken a Level 1 or Top Rope course in the last 2 years. At the conclusion of this course, you will feel comfortable and confident at the climbing gym and be able to top-rope climb without instruction/supervision.
