Co-Curricular Making: Honouring Indigenous Connections
to Land, Culture and the Relational Self | July 2023

Way' SSHRC Project Educators, Community Partners, Research Partners, and Research Assistants,

On June 8, we witnessed a beautiful moment representing resurgence and revitalization when the first eight UBCO Bachelor of Nsyilxcn Fluency graduates walked and danced across the stage at UBC Okanagan. In the same ceremony, Dr. Pauline Terbasket was honoured with a Doctor of Laws degree. Dr. Terbasket spoke about the change she has witnessed over the years, the work for the water, land, Syilx people—all of tmixʷ—that she has been part of, and the heartfelt messages of her Mother about never giving up. Congratulations to all of you!!

Looking back, thank you to everyone who completed our Year Two Reflections Survey. Your contributions are vital to understanding the co-curricular making of all those involved in this partnership. It is still not to late to respond; please see the link here: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3edYbsijTEoWznU. Winners of the draw for books by Syilx authors are: Janet Slaney, Shannon Nystrom, Dena Shutlz, and Adrian Zuyderduyn, all from Central Okanagan Public Schools!

As always, a reminder that the Co-curricular Making Resources page, emphasizing Syilx Okanagan Knowledge, is there for you. Feel free to visit! This webpage emerged from the Syilx and Settler Pedagogy Circle who collaborated to create a space where all could learn in preparation for the Kelowna Art Gallery arrival of Carey Newman's Witness Blanket in 2022.

On the Syilx Okanagan Moon Calendar, June 28 - July 27 is the time of ksiyaʔtən| Okanagan service berry or siya. The image above shows siyaʔ at this time on Syilx Okanagan Territory. We hope that wherever you find yourself during these summer months, you will have the opportunity to spend time with the land!

Sincerely,
SSHRC Facilitation Team
