Free the trees!

Please free the trees! Installing Christmas lights or other items on public trees is not permitted. Attaching lights can result in tree damage by girdling (constricting) the tree if the lights are not removed in a timely manner. This can create weak spots that could lead to trunk and branch failures. The fasteners can also cause damage by create wounds or girdling branches.

As the Town manages and maintains over 15,000 public trees, it is our best practice not to permit any decorating of these trees. Thank you for your cooperation! Residents and business owners are welcome to decorate trees on their private property but make sure to consider doing so in ways that prevent permanent damage.

Preparing your yard for winter

Here are some reminders for getting your yard ready for winter:

  • Watering: Before the ground freezes and after trees drop their leaves, give them a deep watering and ensure the water reaches their roots.
  • Weed Control: Clean weeds from flowerbeds and planting areas. Dispose of plants with flower heads and seed in the garbage instead of composter.
  • Turf: Fall is a good time to aerate and topdress. Topdressing acts a mulch for your turf and helps to compensate for the wind erosion that takes place in the winter
  • Irrigation Systems: Adjust your timers so there are more days between watering; shut down and blow out systems with compressed air so ice doesn’t form inside the lines ensuring pipes don’t burst.
