The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón “I still remember the day my father took me to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books for the first time.” This is the opening line of the novel, set in post-WWII Barcelona, about a young boy named Daniel who discovers a mysterious book in a hidden library. As Daniel grows up, he becomes obsessed with uncovering the secrets behind the novel and the enigmatic author who wrote it. This journey leads him through a labyrinth of mystery, romance, and dark intrigue. This book has magic realism plus a suspenseful plot and I could not put it down. This novel is written for book lovers with amazing storytelling. A must-read for anyone who appreciates a well-told story filled with magic, mystery, and a touch of the gothic. - Emma See more Library Staff Picks | | Libraries [Re]Imagined: Libraries Support Civically Engaged Communities Jennifer Murley, Library CEO In July 2024, we launched a new blog series called 'Libraries [Re]Imagined' to educate our community about the modern library and promote critical thinking about the BMPL's role. This month's theme is civic engagement. First, let's define what civic engagement means. Civic engagement can involve exercising your right to vote, attending board meetings, participating in community conversations, and having a chance to express your voice in community planning. Public libraries provide communities access to resources and opportunities that help build engaged citizens. Whether you need assistance navigating government information, access to free technology for participation in online opportunities, training on identifying fake news or misinformation, non-partisan materials, or special events about the democratic process, public libraries are a one-stop-shop for all these needs. At BMPL, you can access free support in navigating government information, free technology for participation in Council meetings, engagement activities such as surveys or virtual focus groups, authoritative information, and more. I've compiled a list of current engagement opportunities on Library and Town-wide projects, and resources that our team has put together to help navigate the overwhelming abyss of online information and identify credible sources that may help you make informed decisions. *In case you haven’t read it, the book Teardown, by local author Dave Meslin, is available in our collection and has been recently adapted into a new 6-epsiode series titled “Unrigged”, which will air every Sunday at 8 p.m. on TV Ontario (TVO). The book takes a non-partisan approach to evaluating Canadian elections, voter apathy, and potential solutions, untangling the challenges facing modern democracy. Watch the trailer online now.
