Tax Notices Are In The Mail

Property taxes are levied each year around mid-May and billed for the calendar year. Money raised from property taxes is critical to funding local programs and services.

Tax rates are based on the funds needed to provide services for the year and are set to share the cost of providing the services.

Property tax payments are due on July 2, 2024. For ways to pay your property taxes, please visit the City of Nanaimo's Payments page.

Home Owner Grant

The Home Owner Grant (HOG) reduces the amount of property tax you pay for your principal residence. This program is administered by the Province of BC.

To apply and to learn more, visit the Province of BC's Website.

Deferment

Tax deferment is a low-interest loan program that helps qualified homeowners pay their annual property taxes on their principal residence. For more information and to apply, visit the Province of BC's website.

Public Works Day Celebrations

Wednesday, May 24, was a beautiful, sunny day of learning at Public Works! Following along with the National Public Works Week theme of “advancing quality of life for all", staff led hundreds of grades 4 and 5 students through the Public Works yard on an interactive tour. Each of the different departments of Public Works led demonstrations and highlighted the work that keeps our toilets flushing, our storm drains draining, our fire trucks driving, our sanitation trucks collecting, and our city moving! Later in the day, staff opened the doors for adults and families as well. From the pipes that bring us our drinking water to the busy mechanics bay, it was an opportunity to explore the innerworkings of Nanaimo's infrastructure.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Public Works Open House and to the City of Nanaimo Public Works employees who helped make this a fun and informative event!

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. Make sure to plan your commute and, if possible, plan an alternate route. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Thank you for your patience!

Midtown Water Supply Project

  • Construction work is starting on Crescent View Drive from Crescent View Drive to Boundary Avenue. Traffic will be reduced to single-lane-alternating during construction hours, typically 7am-7pm. Expect delays and account for extra time in this area. Street parking is not permitted in the construction zone.
  • The trail that connects VIU, the Black Diamond neighbourhood and Third Street is closed to the public. This area is an active construction site for the installation of the water supply main. Construction traffic will enter and exit the work zone at Third Street across from the Rotary Field House.
  • Commuters can expect minor delays and visual distractions along many streets in the City while construction continues on this project. Drivers, pay close attention to signage and the construction traffic as they enter and exit these sections of the project:
    • East Wellington, Westwood Road to Bowen Road
    • Griffiths Road, end to Madsen Road
    • Third Street across from the Rotary Fieldhouse
    • College Drive, near the Parkway intersection
    • Jingle Pot Road, near Black Diamond Drive

Pedestrians and cyclists watch for a separate detour around the work zone. For your safety, please obey all signs and traffic control persons. Commuters are encouraged to avoid this area during this time if possible. All businesses remain open and accessible.
  • There will be some recurring traffic disruptions on Bowen Road, between Rosstown Road and Northfield Road. Access to Beban Park and Beban Plaza may be affected at times, please use alternate access. All park amenities and programs, and all businesses, remain open and accessible.
  • At times, Rosstown Road will be reduced to single lane alternating traffic between Bowen Road and Whitney Road.
