Make the most of your time at UBCO. 

Celebrate the start of the school year with Weeks of Welcome! Whether you’re a brand new or returning student, Weeks of Welcome features of a variety of events to meet new people and make the most of your uni experience. There are a variety of faculty-specific welcome events, outdoor yoga on Commons Field, a club expo, and more! Check out all the events below.

This Friday: Bring the Heat to Nonis 🔥 

Stop. Drop. And send a text to your UBCO bestie group chat to let them know your Friday night plans are solved. The women's soccer team is taking on the UFV Cascades and it's the perfect free event to start your weekend. Don't have anyone to go with? No worries! Heat home games are one of the best ways to meet new people on campus. 

Kickoff is at 5:30 pm. See you there! ⚽️

Sept. 9: Rainbow Staircase welcome

Stop by the Rainbow Staircase outside the UNC on September 9 between 11 am to 1 pm to meet the Pride Programmers and enjoy light refreshments!

The Pride Programming team has tons of events in the works this year and can’t wait to build an incredible community on campus.

Sept. 9: Mastering the art of making friends

Looking to make more friends on campus? Join SVPRO and the Student Experience Office for a workshop on making friends followed by a speed-friending session! You can stop by for just the workshop, just speed-friending, or attend both if you're interested in the full experience.

Sept. 12: Kickback with Black Student Success

Black students are invited to the annual Kickback event on September 12 from 4 to 7 pm on the Commons Field outside Nechako.  

Stop by and grab a bite to eat from the BBQ, enjoy live music, play lawn games, and mingle with Black students, staff, and faculty.  

This event is free to attend, but you are encouraged to RSVP to ensure any dietary or accessibility needs are met.

Save the date! Dirty Dash is coming soon

You don’t want to miss one of UBCO’s most iconic events – Dirty Dash! Happening September 27, this annual mud run features 14 fun obstacles. You don’t need to be a hardcore runner to join; all fitness levels are welcome! There will also be prizes to score, such as best costume.  

Sign up as a team of four and receive four food truck vouchers.

Sept. 18: NRG x UBCO Rec 5 km run (or walk) 

Kelowna’s social run club, NRG, is coming to campus for a 5 km run combined with bootcamp-style workouts. Not a big runner? Join the walking group! There’s something for everyone including burgers and drinks at The Well after the run.

  • Free Fitness Week: Happening next week (Sept. 9 to 15)! Attend a group fitness class or make your own workout in the Hangar Fitness Centre. Unlimited access, all for free! See the class schedule. 🧘‍♀️
  • The intramural sports registration deadline is coming up! Sign up for the lottery by 11 pm on Sept. 9 for your chance to join the fun. 
  • Enjoy some time on the water with stand-up paddle boarding, happening on Sunday afternoons starting Sept. 8
  • Want to explore the area? Go hiking with the Move U Crew! 🥾

This fall, an external review of the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science will be taking place and you are invited to share your thoughts, experiences, and ideas to shape their future priorities.

You can provide written feedback by Sept. 16 or attend an in-person session on Sept. 24.

Welcome back to the Student Learning Hub! We have officially reopened for the year.  

What’s the Student Learning Hub? It’s your one-stop-shop for free and flexible learning supports and resources. Come by and check out our services in LIB 237 from 9 am to 4 pm this fall.

PSA: The course add/drop deadline is on September 16 for most Term 1 classes and it will be here before you know it. Whether you need to refine your schedule, adjust your courses, or are simply looking for guidance, the advising doors are wide open from 9 am to 4 pm every weekday.

Resources to support your wellbeing

Looking for ways to support your wellness on campus? Swing by Picnic on the first floor of the UNC and learn about all the resources and services available to you through the Wellbeing & Accessibility Services team. Some of the things you’ll find at Picnic include drop-ins with the nurse on campus, grab-and-go breakfasts, community meals, food skill workshops, free condoms, harm reduction information, and more!

If you’re new to residence this year, chances are you’re worried about what settling in is going to look like. Beyond making yourself feel at home in your room, you might be thinking about making friends. You’re moving into a new community with a bunch of people who will start out as strangers. By no means is it easy. But you can make it easier by coming in with a good perspective and by taking advantage of opportunities that come your way.
