Update on HEARTH site selection As work continues to select a site for the provincial HEARTH program that will bring much-needed temporary transitional housing with on-site resident supports to Squamish, numerous site constraints have emerged through the due diligence process for 37956 Loggers Lane (X̱wún̓eḵw Park) that has deemed the site not viable. As a result, the site is no longer being considered for the program. Every little thing you do can make a difference helping the District manage the supply and demand of water across the community. Here are a few simple rainy‑day tips: - Turn Off Automatic Sprinklers: Ensure your automated irrigation systems have rain sensors installed so they don't water during a downpour.
- Save Rainwater for the Garden: Water use restrictions apply only to the use of tap water for watering lawns, trees and shrubs. Keep a watering can outside during rainy days to capture some free water.
| | - Shorten Your Showers: Even a minute less helps reduce demand on our system.
- Run Full Loads: Dishwashers and washing machines use the same amount of water whether they’re half‑full or full.
- Check for Leaks: Rainy days are a perfect time for indoor home checks.
Together, we can protect Squamish’s water supply. To mark World Ocean Day this week, we’re celebrating all the incredible wildlife that depends on Squamish’s rivers, estuary, and coastal waters and reminding everyone that healthy oceans start with healthy watersheds. Here are some tips to help protect our oceans: - Ditch the disposables: Reduce your plastic waste to keep it out of the ocean by carrying a reusable water bottle, coffee mug, and grocery bags.
| | - Choose ocean-safe products: Choose sustainable, eco-certified seafood, as well as ocean-friendly brands of shampoo, sunscreen and cleaning supplies.
- Safe disposal: Dispose of pesticides and paints properly so they don’t end up in our oceans. GFL’s Recycling Depot (38950 Queens Way) and the Squamish Landfill accept consumer pesticides bearing both the product label and the poison symbol.
- Recreate responsibly: Whether you’re boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding, always keep a safe distance from wildlife and avoid disturbing sensitive habitat.
