Weather Alert Issued: Air Quality Advisory for Howe Sound

Environment Canada has issued a Yellow level air quality warning for Howe Sound.

Wildfire smoke is expected over the next 24-48 hours.During a wildfire, smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour.

Stay tuned to Environment Canada and the Province's Air Quality Warnings Page for updates at aqwarnings.gov.bc.ca.

B.C. Under Provincial State of Emergency

Important reminder: B.C. under provincial state of emergency due to considerable number of wildfires and vulnerable wildfire conditions.

As communities across the province continue to face the devastating impacts of wildfires, we are urging the public to remain vigilant under current conditions.

Key restrictions and reminders:

  • Off-road vehicles (ORV) are prohibited on Crown Land to reduce wildfire risks as wildfire response resources can be severely strained in such times.
  • Campfire Ban remains in effect for everyone in the District of Squamish, and surrounding regions.
  • Squamish Fire Rescue is actively responding to complaints of people ignoring the bans, and will issue fines. The fine is a minimum of $1150.00 for each person around the fire.
  • Further restrictions – such as a backcountry access ban – may take effect if fire conditions worsen or further resources are drawn to new fires.

Stay up to date with latest wildfire news or alerts:

The many people recreating in our region creates a dangerous scenario for forest fires – now is not the time for risky behaviour while recreating or camping.

If you witness any fire ban violations, or wildfires, report it to 911 within municipal boundaries or call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

Impact Notice: Bailey Street Closure

Due to the current and escalating wildfire risk to the community, unauthorized vehicle access to the estuary via Bailey Street will be closed.

The closure area is delineated in red within the map. All vehicles within the closure area were asked to leave the unpaved portion of Bailey Street immediately.

The road closure is part of the District of Squamish’s ongoing response to the wildfire risk to the community and declared state of emergency within the Province. The danger class value for Squamish from B.C. Wildfire Service is forecasting high this weekend.

The closure follows the recent bans by the Province of BC and Squamish Lillooet Regional District on off road vehicles in most fire centre areas (BC Gov News and SLRD Wildfire Updates - 2026 | Squamish-Lillooet Regional District).

Thank you for adhering to this closure.

Attention Squamish trail users, a reminder that the Squamish 50 is on this weekend August 15-16!

The event's signature 50-mile race begins and ends in Downtown Squamish. As a result, please expect some minor event noise in the early morning and traffic delays during the course of the day. Here are a few helpful tips to remember this weekend:

  • Stay on Marked Trails: Avoid trespassing on private land or trampling sensitive habitat.
  • Be Courteous on the Trails: Yield to other users, move aside when needed, and keep your dog from approaching other people without permission.

Good luck to all Squamish 50 participants!

Wildlife Wednesday – Recap

A reminder that food waste – the main bear attractant in our neighbourhoods – should be placed in organics totes, not garbage totes. This is why organics totes are serviced weekly from the end of April until the end of October.

Contamination in residential organic waste totes has become a major issue affecting composting operations.

Organics and recycling tote audits will continue throughout the summer. Organics totes containing garbage, plastics, pet waste, or other non-organic materials will be turned around and not serviced until contaminants are removed.

Residents are responsible for properly sorting their waste into:

  • Organics
  • Recycling
  • Garbage

Contamination of these waste streams is a bylaw violation and may lead to refused collection service. Please take a moment to sort your waste correctly before collection day.

Proper separation helps protect local recycling and composting programs and keeps valuable resources out of the landfill – while keeping us all safe!
