New Primary Care Teaching Clinic Is Set To Open In 2024!

A new UBC Team-based Primary Care Teaching Clinic is moving forward and will be housed in the new Gateway Health Building, opening in 2024. The clinic was recently approved as part of the 2022/23 UBC Budget, aiming to advance and accelerate the delivery of patient-centred, team-based interprofessional primary care through collaborative health education. KIN Ph.D. Candidate Naomi Maldonado-Rodriguez Receives a 2022-23 Killam Doctoral Scholarship

Congratulations to KIN Ph.D. candidate Naomi Maldonado-Rodriguez on receiving the 2022-23 UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarship!

Supervised by KIN professor Dr. Eli Puterman, Naomi's doctoral research is grounded by an intersectional and anti-colonial feminist praxis that recognizes the importance of relationship-building, relational accountability, and centring the voices of those made most marginalized.

In collaboration with Dr. Vicky Bungay, Professor at UBC School of Nursing, Naomi will undertake a community-based research project that explores accessible and sustainable approaches to health promotion and physical activity for women experiencing gender-based violence. Click below to read the full announcement!

KIN Ph.D. Candidate Rachel Dickens Recieves the 2022-23 Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship

Congratulations to KIN Ph.D. candidate Rachel Dickens on being awarded the 2022-2023 Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship (AGF) to support her doctoral studies in the School working with Dr. Robert Boushel! The fellowship provides an annual stipend of $18,200 plus tuition for the first 3 years and 8 months of study.

Rachel was recently interviewed and featured by the BC Diabetes Research Network (BCDRN). She is a BCDRN trainee, as well as an accomplished Registered Dietician and a Certified Diabetes Educator. Rachel’s research focuses on the role of traditional foods and land-based physical activity in diabetes prevention in Indigenous communities. Dr. Guy Faulkner and Dr. Eli Puterman's New Publication on Implementing Active Play Standards in Early Childhood Education and Care

Congratulations to KIN professors Drs. Guy Faulkner and Eli Puterman, and their co-authors, for their newly published article, "Implementing active play standards: a qualitative study with licensed childcare providers in British Columbia, Canada".

Their study qualitatively examines the barriers and facilitators ECEC practitioners faced in implementing the standard, and explores the role of the capacity-building initiative.

The Annual Review of Psychology Accepts Dr. Mark Beauchamp's New Article

Dr. Mark Beauchamp and colleagues recently had a paper accepted in the Annual Review of Psychology titled "Psychology of Athletic Endeavour". Since 1950, the Annual Review of Psychology has published articles “covering the significant developments in the field of psychology," having an impact factor (IF) of 24. This article examines the diverse ways in which psychological processes contribute to athletic strivings. This paper will be the second article in this journal (ever) that deals with psychological factors related to sporting achievement and/or behaviour.

Dr. Bill Sheel Presents at the 2022 August Krogh Symposium

Dr. Bill Sheel was invited to Copenhagen to present at the 100th anniversary celebration of Professor August Krogh's Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine (1920).

The symposium gathered colleagues within the fields of physiology and metabolism in order to share insights from the past and present, and to provide a sense of future advances in the field.

The title of Professor Sheel’s presentation was "The hyperpnoea of exercise in health: respiratory influences on neurovascular control".

Congratulations to KIN alumni Emma Nielsen and Dr. Taylor Cleworth, and KIN professor Dr. Mark Carpenter, on their recent publication "Exploring emotional-modulation of visually evoked postural responses through virtual reality" in Neuroscience Letters!

Their study aims to assess the feasibility of eliciting visual evoked postural responses (VEPRs) using head-mounted virtual reality (VR) and uses this method to examine the potential influence of virtual postural threat on the visual control of balance. Click below to read the full publication!

2022 Saltin International Course in Exercise and Clinical Physiology
(Graduate Students)

Registration opens Sunday, May 1, 2022

The Saltin International Graduate Course brings together faculty and students from Canadian, Danish and other universities around the world for a four-day in-person intensive PhD level course in exercise physiology and clinical exercise physiology. The course integrates foundational knowledge with frontier research directions from basic science and applied approaches to investigate mechanisms regulating subcellular, tissue, organ function and integrative physiological system responses to acute exercise and training in healthy individuals and clinical populations.

Become a HealtheSteps Coach! (Undergraduates and Graduates)

Calling all upper year undergraduate and graduate KIN students! The Lifestyle Research Team (PI: Dr. Robert Petrella) at UBC is hiring students to deliver the HealtheSteps program.

HealtheSteps is a free, virtual healthy lifestyle prescription program for adults (18+ years of age) aimed at reducing sedentary behaviour, unhealthy eating habits, and improving wellbeing.

Coaches are certified to work with participants to set goals in the areas of physical activity, exercise, healthy eating, and mindfulness over six monthly coaching sessions. This is a great summer and fall opportunity for KIN students interested in coaching and health & wellness.

Volunteer in UBC Sexual Health's New Study (Undergraduate Students)

UBC Sexual Health is conducting their in-person JUNIPER study on physical and mental responses to sexually explicit images and videos. They are currently looking for women who experience sexual arousal and desire difficulties to participate in their study. Consider participating if you:

  • have not reached menopause
  • are ages 18-50
  • are in a sexual relationship
  • have sexual arousal/desire difficulties (i.e. low desire)

School of Celebration of Places and People

The School of Kinesiology celebrated the Board of Governors’ approval to begin construction of the Gateway Building and honoured special KIN members on April 21st at the Gunn Pavilion. Dr. Mark Carpenter presented the history of planning and design work undertaken leading up the to the start of construction, and showed many of the features of KIN’s new home in Gateway. Dr. Mark Beauchamp and Dr. Mike Koehle gave a tribute to Dr. Don McKenzie for his scholarly

contributions to the School and service to the community over many years and celebrated his award of Officer of the Order of Canada. He was presented with a Haida Cedar Paddle by artist Raven Leblanc. Dr. Robert Boushel honoured KIN Alumnus Atila Ozkaplan for the Alumni Builder Award as part of the 100th year of alumni UBC. Chanel Flores and Deborah Gromer gave a tribute to Fran Harrison who will be retiring in June after many years of outstanding leadership supporting students as Advising Manager.

Problematizing the ‘Control the Controllable’ Narrative

To close out this year's UBC Exercise, Kinesiology and Health Seminar Program, KIN professor Dr. Erica Bennett will be hosting a seminar covering her research on the role of privilege and marginalization in shaping how elite athletes cope with and adapt to stressful events throughout their athletic careers.

Dr. Bennett is an Assistant Professor in Health, Culture, and Inclusion at the UBC School of Kinesiology. Her program of research attends to the psychological, behavioural, and sociocultural factors shaping sport, exercise, and health-related adaptational processes across the life course.

Whether you want to participate as an office, department, group of colleagues or an individual, there is an activity for everyone. Hosted by Human Resources and UBC Recreation, teams will compete in a variety of physical and intellectual challenges, activities and fun! No experience is necessary and all ability levels are welcome. The event will be in-person, but virtual activities will be available during the event.
