New Floods Topic Page

The NCCEH has created a new topic page that provides a collection of key resources on floods.  The resources are organized according to flood stages: 1) Prevention; 2) Preparedness; 4) Response and Health Effects; and 4) Recovery. Key points range from developing resilient infrastructure and public flood risk education prior to a flood to addressing mould, contamination, home remediation and mental health in the recovery stages after a flood.

Flood Resources and Safety Information – Alberta Health Services

In the wake of the 2013 Calgary floods, Alberta Health Services began developing flood resources to help public health professionals and practitioners prepare for, mediate, and recover from the effects of severe flooding emergencies. This compendium of resources contains guidance on flood water precautions, providing emergency kits, and preparing for evacuations. It also draws attention to a variety of post-flood safety issues such as mould, food facilities, safe play areas, and home remediation.

Floods – Natural Disasters and Severe Weather – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have compiled resources for the public on flood preparedness and staying safe during a flood. The resources are organized according to key themes in flood and disaster response: before the storm, after the storm, worker safety, water safety, and learning and awareness. This compilation also covers health and safety issues for natural disasters such as storms and hurricanes, paying particular attention to emergency water and food supplies, power outages, and guides for hospitals and health care facilities.

Healthy Built Environments Toolkit Updated

  • An updated version of the “Healthy Built Environment Linkages Toolkit: making the links between design, planning and health” (Version 2.0) has been released. The HBE Linkages Toolkit synthesizes research and key messages to help describe how planning and design principles are linked to population health outcomes. The toolkit is broken into a full report and a two page summary

Chronic Disease Dashboard Updated

  • The Chronic Disease Dashboard is an interactive tool that provides summary statistics on a variety of non-communicable diseases and conditions in BC. Specifically, it presents time trends and geographical variations at the HSDA level of overall and sex-specific prevalence and incidence measures for 32 chronic conditions and their sub-types. The latest update added two years of new data and it can be viewed on the BCCDC wesite.

Assessing Interest in a Special Issue on Climate Change and Health

  • The Public Health Agency of Canada’s Journal Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention in Canada is exploring the possibility of publishing a special issue on climate change and health next April, 2019, to coincide with Earth Day. Click here for more details.
