Public Service Announcements and News Releases

Ministry of Health announces Security Review

On May 20, the Ministry of Health announced that work has started on an independent, external review into hospital safety and security. The review will include visits to a number of sites across the province and consultations with stakeholders, including staff, physicians, and First Nations and Métis organizations.

This review, expected to take approximately six months, will build on initiatives already implemented, including the deployment of metal detectors at the emergency departments in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, and North Battleford, as well as the Regina Urgent Care Centre. Additionally, the SHA has added the equivalent of 51 full-time Protective Services positions across the province to provide 24/7 staffing for screening and operations.

The SHA welcomes and supports this opportunity to further strengthen hospital safety and security.

New addiction treatment spaces open in Prince Albert

Twenty-one new sober living spaces have opened in Prince Albert to help individuals maintain their recovery after addiction treatment programs. Made possible through a partnership between the Ministry of Social Services, Ministry of Health, Oxford House Saskatchewan and the City of Prince Albert, the project consists of four single-detached homes located throughout Prince Albert.

SHA CARES - Living our Values

When it comes to heart attacks, time is muscle. The faster a patient gets to the Cardiac Catheterization (cath) lab and has the blocked artery opened, the better their recovery. Every minute that passes can mean more heart muscle damage.

A collaboration between Cardiology at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and Medavie Health Services West is improving care for patients who call 911 with heart attack symptoms.

With this protocol, paramedics perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) in the field and transmit it directly to the on-call interventional cardiologist. If a heart attack is confirmed, the cath lab team is activated immediately and the patient bypasses the emergency department, going straight to the cath lab for treatment.

The result is faster care, better outcomes, and fewer emergency department visits for heart attack patients.

eHR Viewer Access to patient-uploaded Health Care Directives (HCDs)

Starting May 25, 2026, providers and care team members with access to the eHR Viewer can view Health Care Directives (HCDs) uploaded by patients through MySaskHealthRecord (MSHR). This enhancement supports more connected, patient-centered care by providing timely access to information that reflects patients’ wishes and values.

Access to HCDs in the eHR Viewer supports patient autonomy, enables province-wide sharing at any time, and helps care teams deliver goal-concordant care. HCDs should inform shared decision-making conversations; patients with capacity can change or revoke directives at any time, so confirming documents are current remains best practice.

Need an eHRViewer account? Get ready by requesting access here.

Updated procedure and clinical forms will be available to shortly.

Safety Talk - Shared Mental Model

A shared mental model is when there is a shared understanding of what's going on and what needs to happen next.

When team members do not have a shared mental model, communication and processes break down causing patient safety to be at risk.

Share a time when you did not have a shared mental model with someone. How did you recognize it and get back on track?

Please read this Safety Talk and post/share with your teams.

Recognition of Nursing Competence Clinical Protocol

Effective today, May 21, 2026, the CS-PR-0001 Recognition of Nursing Competence clinical protocol is in effect. This clinical protocol recognizes existing nursing competence when a provincial policy, procedure, or standard replaces a legacy or local document and there is no substantive change to the skill, workflow, training, or equipment.

Nurses remain accountable to review new provincial documents at the time of implementation. With the support of local clinical leadership, nurses may self identify as competent to continue practice, removing the need to complete a learning module or return demonstration when criteria are met.

Recognition of Competence supports safe provincial standardization and shifts practice away from one size fits all training toward targeted, high value education that directly supports clinical outcomes.

This protocol is effective immediately and will be applied as provincial clinical documents are implemented. It remains applicable where criteria are met, even when a provincial clinical procedure includes on hire or continuing competence requirements. These requirements do not mean universal retraining is required at the point of transition.
