UPGRADES TO BRENNAN PARK RECREATION CENTRE

Mayor Armand Hurford, MP Patrick Weiler, MLA Susie Chant and Squamish Nation Elder Donna Billy announced the investment of $19 million from the federal and provincial governments for upgrades to the Brennan Park Recreation Centre and the Squamish River Dike at Jimmy Jimmy (Judd Slough).

This stream of funding is for Green Infrastructure projects. The District now has $10.4M from other levels of government towards the long list of upgrades that are needed at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

LOGGERS SPORTS FESTIVAL

The annual Squamish Loggers Sports Festival is on this weekend!

Please note the following traffic impacts from Friday, August 2 to Sunday, August 4:

Friday: Cleveland Avenue will be closed from 5 pm - 9 pm to motorized traffic to accomodate the Bed Races at 6 pm. 

Saturday: The Kids Festival will be held in Junction Park and U Siyam Pavilion from 10 am - 12 pm. Expect high traffic and pedestrian volumes in Downtown Squamish.

Sunday: Cleveland Avenue will be closed between Pemberton Avenue and Vancouver Street from 10 am to 2 pm to accomodate the Loggers Sports Festival Parade.

Drivers should be aware of increased pedestrians and cyclists in these areas during the festival events. Residents are encouraged to use active transporation if attending the festival. Bike valet services will be available from festival organizers.

THE RE-USE-IT FAIR IS BACK!

When: August 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Brennan Park Recreation Centre Auditorium

What's accepted?

  • Small appliances in good working order or in need of minor repair.
  • Large appliances in good working order.
  • Furniture, household items, garden tools, sports equipment, pet accessories, and seasonal items in reasonable condition.

What's not accepted?

  • TVs, computers, printers, VCRs (recycle these at the Bottle Depot).
  • Toys and other kids’ accessories (there will be a specific kid’s swap in November).
  • Fabrics and clothing (there will be a clothing and book swap in October).
  • Books, music, games (there will be a clothing and book swap in October).
  • Mattresses (recycle these at the landfill).
  • Items broken or damaged beyond repair.

Please note:

Folks will be asked to self-sort. Volunteers will be on-site to help find the right location for items. Items need to be clean and in working order. We are unable to accept broken or dirty items.

We can only accept items that fit in the categories described. Furniture will be accepted based on weather. Drop off items will ONLY be accepted between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

This event is organized by the District of Squamish and the Squamish Climate Action Network to advance a circular economy and reduce avoidable waste. AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY PLAN

Age-friendly communities allow for healthy, safe and equitable aging. To help create our plan, the District of Squamish is reaching out to community members of all ages, especially seniors who are comfortable  sharing their experiences.

NOTICE OF TRAFFIC AND NOISE IMPACTS

Please note the film production will be underway from August 2-9 in the Valleycliffe Neighbourhood.

This will result in reduced parking availability along Westway Avenue and Cherry Drive corner.

Crews will be working on a project to remove hydrocarbon contaminated soil at 39619 Galbraith Avenue.

Work will start on August 6 and is targeted to complete September 10. Work will mostly occur within bylaw hours but will be starting as early as 2 a.m. and finishing as late as 6 p.m. Work will not be occurring on the weekend.

SP'AKW'US FEATHER PARK KITE CLOSURE

The watersports beach at Sp’akw’us Feather Park on the oceanfront remains temporarily closed to kites and kiteboarders. While an investigation is underway, kites are being restricted out of caution to ensure public safety.
 

Wing Foiling and windsurfing continue to be permitted.

 

 

 

STAGE 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

Stage 2 divides the community into seven areas, and provides each area with ONE day upon which they can water WITH A SPRINKLER:

  • Monday - Valleycliffe, Hospital Hill
  • Tuesday - Downtown
  • Wednesday - Dentville, Business Park, North Yards
  • Thursday - Loggers Lane East, Quest University
  • Friday - Garibaldi Highlands
  • Saturday - Garibaldi Estates
  • Sunday - Brackendale

Even addresses: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Odd addresses: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Pro Tip: Inexpensive automatic timers are a great way to pre-schedule your watering if you are not home.

LATEST INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Work to upgrade and repair select watermains throughout Squamish is underway:

  • August: Government Road near Depot Road,
  • August: Flushing and video inspections of the sanitary mains in the downtown area.

Please expect traffic impacts near each area due to excavation work, and possible single-lane alternating traffic.

August 20, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join us for a Choose Your Own Adventure day at Pacific Exhibition Centre. Includes round-trip transportation from Brennan Park Recreation Centre, giving you approximately 3.5 hours to explore the grounds.

Adult Swim Lessons | 15 yrs+

August 26-30, 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.
