The Fall and Winter Activity Guide will be available for online viewing starting Wednesday, Friday 7. Registration for aquatics programs opens Wednesday, August 12, and registration for all other programs begins Wednesday, August 19. Explore exciting opportunities for all ages and interests. ACTIVITY GUIDE | Lifeguard Appreciation Day July 31 was Lifeguard Appreciation Day! Mayor Leonard Krog joined to celebrate the dedication of our lifeguards as they work to keep the community safe around water. Did you know? The City of Nanaimo employs over 80 lifeguards who provide safety supervision at Beban Pool, Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, and Westwood Lake. They are also the smiling faces who teach swimming lessons, aquafit, Swim to Survive and advanced aquatics programs. This team also teaches drowning prevention at special events as the Water Safety Education Team. Interested in being a Lifeguard? ACTIVITY GUIDE | New Amenities The City of Nanaimo continues to add amenities to the Stadium District as part of a multi-phased improvement plan for the area. The latest addition is a new fully accessible bleacher structure at Q'unq'inuqwstuxw Stadium (pronounced ki-KIN-ish-TOOK) that seats approximately 1,200 spectators. Construction began in Spring 2025 and was completed in May 2026.
| | Snuneymuxw Days We were honoured to contribute to this vibrant celebration by showcasing the Lighting a Path projections, helping illuminate the evening with the beautiful work of Snuneymuxw artists. Lighting a Path is a partnership between the City of Nanaimo and Snuneymuxw First Nation that shines a spotlight on Snuneymuxw artists, honouring the Land through an illuminated display. These special projections featured art by the late Dr. William Good; the late Joel Good; Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun; kwasilwit, Chenoa Point; Noel Brown; Ryan Hughes; and yutustana:t, Gena Seward-Wilson. Thank you to Snuneymuxw First Nation for inviting us to be part of such an inspiring weekend, and to the artists whose work continues to bring light, beauty, and powerful stories to our community. | | Loudon Park Improvements The much-anticipated ceremonial ground breaking for the new community activity centre at Loudon Park was held on Thursday, July 30. The improvements will replace aging infrastructure, support existing recreational users and create a more accessible, welcoming and inclusive destination for residents and visitors. The project budget is $11.4 million. | | Concerts in the Park Head over to Bowen Park Amphitheatre on August 7 from 1 to 2 pm to enjoy some Rock with Paul Gellman. The Gellman Family Trio: Paul Gellman is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has performed in bands and solo since the 70s! He brings soulful tunes in a variety of styles including folk, rock, jazz, klezmer and more. He is joined by son, Josh Gellman, who has also played professionally for many years and recently released an album of original music, and daughter, Shira, whose haunting voice and guitar have graced many stages. All three have original songs and covers to share, so this concert promises to be a great variety show! CONCERTS IN THE PARK | | Lifeguards on Duty Lifeguards are on duty at Westwood Lake First Beach daily from 12 to 5:30 pm (including stat holidays, weather permitting). Visitors are encouraged to swim during these supervised hours for added safety and to follow all posted beach and water safety guidelines. | | Rotary Centennial Garden The Rotary Centennial garden is inspired by, and responds to, its location at the shoreline. The form of ocean waves are echoed in the patterns on the ground and in the shape of the wood and steel pergolas. Local plants like salal, evergreen huckleberry and coastal strawberry are incorporated into the garden. Be sure to visit this beautiful space in Maffeo Sutton Park, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of Newcastle (Saysutshun) and Protection Island. | | Car Trunk Sale The second and final Car Trunk sale takes place this August 22 from 9 am to 2 pm in Vancouver Island University's (VIU), lower parking lot off Fifth Street. Anyone looking for a bargain or a unique buy can join up to 150 vendors selling used items from the trunk of their cars at this free event. | | Book a Facility Looking to book a facility this fall? For more information on Nanaimo construction projects, visit the current Construction page on the City's website. - Third St between Howard Ave and Pine St is closed 24 hrs per day until August 13. Detours are in place.
- Single lane alternating traffic on Departure Bay Rd between Little John Way and Green Leaf Place. Expect delays.
- Single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Rd at Turner Rd and McGirr Rd intersection while crews work on building a new sidewalk and lay a new watermain.
- Single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Rd (westbound lane) between Brickyard Rd and McGirr Rd to install a new sanitary sewer monitoring station and paint road markings. The existing traffic signals at Hammond Bay Rd and Turner Rd intersection will operate as normal.
- Single lane alternating traffic along Turner Rd from Hammond Bay Rd to Kenning Pl while crews work on painting road markings. Traffic signals at Hammond Bay Rd and Turner Rd intersection will operate as normal.
- Blueback Road between Groveland Drive and Dover Road will be closed August 5 from 7am to 6pm with detour in place. Single lane alternating traffic will be in effect weekdays.

When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Remember that construction zone speed limits are 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted.
