MEETING WITH LOCAL ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVES

On November 24th, an orientation meeting was held with representatives of local associations at the Académie de l'Aviation at the Saint-Hyacinthe airport.

The event brought together more than 30 participants from Abitibi, Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean, Outaouais, Lanaudière, Laurentians, Montérégie, Estrie, Center-Québec and the Montreal area.

The purpose of the meeting was to take stock of general aviation in Quebec and its players, namely you the pilots. It was punctuated by the most productive exchanges and sharing of information between the various participants. Some avenues have been identified to enhance the value added of general aviation to Quebec society, including the emphasis on recruitment through an improved training and knowledge update program, a new support program. , a bush section, charity activities and air tourism. More information will be provided in future issues.

We are happy with the level of participation achieved and especially the results obtained. We take this opportunity to thank these participants and our host, the Aviation Academy of Saint-Hyacinthe.

NOTAMS - A MUST ... FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY

Ah NOTAMs! We consult, we do not consult! Our advice, not a good idea to ignore them.

How many pilots got caught as they arrived at their destination and noticed (to their dismay) that the runway is closed. The causes for a closure can be many. But in winter, the main cause is probably snow removal activities. A consultation of the NOTAMs for the destination airport would have saved the moment.

Winter conditions can also cause other difficulties such as degraded runway conditions. This is where the NOTAM comes to the rescue - at least, to notify the pilot.

For example, here is a passage for Trois-Rivières airport, which was in effect on the morning of December 5, 2018.

CYRQ RSC 05/23 95 PCT BARE AND DRY, 5 PCT ICE PATCHES. 1812051250

NOTAM indicates that the runway surface conditions are still good (RSC 05/23) with 95% of the surface bare and dry and 5% with ice patches. The reading was taken at 12:50 UTC or local 07:50.

With this information, you can go and feel safe.

Here is a guide to help you unravel the various acronyms used by the NOTAM office. This guide is an excerpt from the Procedures Manual for NOTAMS.

Before your departure, consult the FIC Québec. They will be happy to update you on the weather on the road and NOTAMs in effect.

Good flight !
