What's Happening at IHC

Keep Your Immune System in Optimal Condition

Fall season is approaching, and we all know what that means; cold and flu season is coming, and 3 viruses are predicted to play a role this year (predominantly influenza, RSV, and the corona viruses -covid included).

These viruses are present every fall/ winter, but mutate so we don’t maintain the long term immunity to stay protected against them year after year. Initiating a plan early fall to keep your immune system functioning optimally and allow your body to mount an efficient response is top of mind with all of our doctors. We remind you all to keep diligent with hand washing, get adequate sleep, and keep sugar intake low. Our doctors can also recommend immune supporting herbs and vitamins to maintain optimal immune health. High dose vitamin C IV is a proven way to decrease cold and flu symptoms and help prevent long lasting post viral symptoms. Let us help you customize an immune support plan that works best for you. Let’s all stay as healthy as we can this fall/ winter season.

What is PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a revolutionary treatment that harnesses your body's natural healing powers. Speed Up Recovery: Experience faster healing times and reduced downtime, allowing you to get back to your lifestyle sooner.

Enhance Pain Relief: PRP's regenerative effects not only target the source of pain but also alleviate discomfort, providing lasting relief.

Improve Joint Function: Say goodbye to limited mobility. PRP therapy restores joint function, ensuring smoother movement and enhanced range of motion.

Lab Testing

MICROBIOME tests to get to the bottom of your allergies!

You've probably heard about the microbiome and wondered about yours. Yes - you can test just out of curiosity. But the 2 big reasons I test are:

1. Ongoing and persistent digestive issues - think pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation

2. Ongoing and persistent immune issues - SEASONAL allergies and FOOD sensitivities

As pointed out by recent research at UBC - dysbiosis is linked to allergies. It's that GUT-IMMUNE connection. What exactly is dysbiosis - it would be like if the dandelions, chickweed and moss overtook your lawn. All great plants, but not what you want growing there. The GI-MAP test is a comprehensive microbiome test that reports levels of bacteria, parasites, viruses and worms - all from DNA analysis and not the older culture technology. It also includes markers of enzyme function, inflammation and gluten sensitivity. All this from a single, simple stool sample.

For a complete list of items analyzed - check out Diagnostic Solutions HERE

Ready to test? Ask your ND to add GI-MAP to your lab requisition and pick up a kit during our business hours.

*No antimicrobial herbs or drugs (antibiotics for example) can be used in the 4 weeks prior to testing.

Boost Your Antioxidants

Glutathione is well known for being one of the strongest antioxidants in the body. It is a tripeptide, synthesized in the liver from cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. It largely functions to reduce oxidative stress, maintain redox balance, enhance detoxification, and regulate the immune system. (1) Not surprisingly, many chronic conditions are associated with reduction in glutathione levels (1-3):

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Infertility
  • Mental Health Disorders
  • Cancer
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Cold and Flus

In the IV suite at IHC, we offer glutathione intravenously and for the use through a nebulizer. Talk to your naturopathic doctor to see if glutathione might be a good add-on to your treatment plan.

From the Cancer Care Centre

10-Year Observational Study at IHC

In 2010, the Integrated Health Clinic (IHC) Cancer Care Centre embarked on a monumental project to assess the actual impact our therapies have on the overall survival for our patients with a confirmed stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Dr. Parmar has led the research which has now collected survival statistics since 2010 for 10 most common stage 4 cancer types treated at IHC with an integrated oncology approach. The first cancer type chosen for data analysis was Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), stage 4 brain cancer. After statistical analysis and comparison to matched controls from the SEER database, a research paper has recently been accepted for publication in a Medline-indexed peer-reviewed medical journal.

Dr. Parmar is working towards securing the necessary funding to complete the data analysis, statistical analysis, and writing of the papers for publication for the remaining 9 most common stage 4 cancer types. In addition, securing appropriate funding is also required for the submissions to medical journals.

Dr. Parmar has been selected for presentation of this study data at two upcoming international conferences:

  • Society of Integrative Oncology (SIO) - Sep 14-16, 2023 (Banff, Alberta)
    • Title: 10-Year Observational Survival Study on an Integrative Naturopathic Treatment Model Including Modulated Electrohyperthermia (mEHT): A Single-Centre Experience. (Poster presentation)
  • Advanced Applications in Medical Practice (AAMP) - Oct 13-15, 2023 (Scottsdale, Arizona)
    • Title: “Clinical Pearlz” – Integrative Palliative Care & Symptom Management
    • Title: From Fever Therapy to Modern Immunotherapy
    • Title: 10-Year observational study on modulated electrohyperthermia (mEHT) in the treatment of Stage 4 Cancers: A single-center experience

Linking Childhood Allergies to the Gut

Childhood allergies affect approximately one in three children in Canada, and their prevalence continues to be on the rise. These common allergies encompass four major groups including asthma, hay fever, food allergies, and eczema. Although these groups of allergies affect different organs and present with different symptoms, researchers at UBC have discovered a shared link between these four groups of allergies and the bacteria present within children’s digestive tracts. This type of study provides clear evidence that our gut microbiome (organisms present in the gut) plays a key role on not only the health of the digestive tract but also are bodies at large, a fundamental principle of naturopathic medicine.

Embracing Body Neutrality

In a society where external pressures often dictate how we view our bodies, the concept of body neutrality offers reprieve. Instead of appearances, body neutrality encourages us to accept our bodies where they are at. At Integrated Health Clinic, we utilize the principles of body neutrality into our holistic approach to wellness, guiding you towards self-acceptance and improved well-being.

Tahini-Smothered Grilled Cabbage

If you’re looking for creative ways to include cabbage in your diet, this recipe is quick and delicious. You’ll be reaching for seconds!

Ingredients:

1 head of green cabbage (about 2 lb.)

3 tbsp plus ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 garlic clove, finely chopped

1/3 cup tahini

1 tsp honey

½ tsp ground cumin

1 lemon (zest and juice from ½)

¼ cup chopped fresh dill (or 1 tsp dried)

1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Salt

Instructions:

1) Prepare the grill on medium-high heat.

2) Cut the cabbage in half through the core, then cut each half into 3 wedges, keeping the core intact. Drizzle with 3 tbsp oil and rub to coat. Season all over with salt.

3) Grill the cabbage until deeply charred on the cut sides and a paring knife slides easily through the center (6–8 minutes per side). Transfer to a cutting board and let cool for 5 minutes (this will allow the cabbage to soften further).

4) Combine garlic, tahini, honey, cumin, and ¼ cup olive oil in a medium bowl. Finely zest the whole lemon and juice half of it, then add both into the bowl. Add a large pinch of salt and whisk until smooth. Whisking constantly, add 3–4 tbsp cold water. The tahini sauce should be creamy, but pourable.

5) Arrange cabbage wedges on a platter and spoon tahini sauce over. Scatter dill over cabbage, then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
