THE RANKIN REPORT

Getting ready for winter in Nova Scotia

Dear Timberlea-Prospect Residents,

Happy New Year to All!

This past year was filled with plenty of challenges never experienced before in this area with devastating fires, damaging floods, and severe storm events. Despite these obstacles and complications, our community has been filled with new success, and modern infrastructure highlighted with the opening of the Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre, the start of the rebuild of the new BLT Community Centre and finalizing the protection of Island Lake Wilderness Area.

In 2024, my priorities are to continue to attract more investment to our area, advocate for progress on the environment, and focus on the acute issue of the rising cost-of-living. There are plenty of ideas to improve how government helps everyday working families which my colleagues and I will soon be able to debate, in the next sitting of the Legislature.

Locally, I’ll continue to work with community groups to pursue further enhancements. The increasingly full schools and childcare centres are some of those areas of immediate importance, given the need to accommodate growth and expected population projections. I also want to ensure that we are maximizing what we can expect from HRM in the new community centre that has been such a long time coming.

Looking forward to continuing working for you.

Warmest regards,

Iain Rankin

Island Lake Wilderness Area

December 20 was a good day for nature conservation and our local region with the announcement of the New Island Wilderness area protecting 14,000 more hectares of land.

Advocates approached me in the early days of my tenure as Minister of Environment, in 2017. In 2019, a wilderness assessment was announced when I was Minister of Lands and Forestry, and then in 2021, we announced 5000 hectares proposed for protection (3 X the size of Halifax peninsula).

After consultation and a name change to reflect the major area of the breathtaking Island Lake, I am delighted to see the finalization of this portion of St Margaret’s Bay protected.

It is an important part of broad-scale ecological connectivity and I want to especially credit Mike Lancaster (pictured with me) for his tenacity and dedication to seeing this through.

We now have 3987 hectares of land called Island Lake Wilderness Area in our backyard protected forever.

Free Lunch

Barb Charteris, a long-time resident of Timberlea, has been hosting a free will lunch at Trinity on the third Tuesday of each month since August.

Barb’s luncheons have anywhere from 12 to 26 people attend. She serves soup, biscuits, some veggies, dessert, tea, and coffee. Those that have chosen to give a donation have been generous, but payment is not required.

While this is not a Trinity United Church event, Barb would like to thank the Church for their use of the facilities and for fostering connection within the community.
