Note: Le texte en français suit l’anglais | Common Ground Food Forum Building a bigger table: Strengthening our relations CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS When: June 15 – 19, 2026 Where: Lakehead University Orillia Campus 500 University Avenue, Orillia, ON How: Submit here to participate in the program Building a bigger table: Strengthening our relations forum will bring four key food networks together: Common Ground Network Canadian Association for Food Studies Food Communities Network Food Secure Canada The forum is focused on understanding the social relations necessary for transitioning and transforming Canada’s agriculture, fisheries and food systems to be equitable and sustainable. This event will bring academic researchers together with agriculture and food systems actors, including civic/community organizations, government, industry organizations, and Indigenous and settler communities, to share knowledge, forge and strengthen connections across disciplines and sectors, and seed new collaborations in food systems research and action. The Forum will feature individual paper presentations, organized panels, roundtables, plenaries, keynote speakers, workshops, poster sessions, and an Exploration Gallery. We are particularly interested in supporting content that: - Moves us towards knowledge sharing
- Builds social expertise around sustainable agriculture, fisheries and food systems
- Strengthens connections amongst researchers and affected groups
- Develops shared goals and objectives.
We encourage a diversity of voices, perspectives, and formats through this call out for your contributions. We also welcome contributions for reimagining the processes by which the Forum’s members and their larger communities interact. The submission form includes an option for proposing ways to build a bigger table into the forum infrastructure. All submissions are due on January 29, 2026. The GBEP Youth Award is an initiative designed to highlight and celebrate exceptional research in the field of bioenergy conducted by students and early‑career researchers. This year’s award recognizes innovative work across a wide range of topics, including environmental, social and economic sustainability, the circular bioeconomy, bioenergy technologies, supply chain logistics, policy development, societal practices and contributions to climate change mitigation. For the 2026 edition, the GBEP Youth Award will be dedicated exclusively to students and recent graduates (Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD) enrolled at academic institutions across the Americas - including North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The selected awardee will present their research during a dedicated session at the 13th GBEP Bioenergy Week, as well as having additional opportunities to present their work at international events co‑organized by GBEP throughout 2026. Kind regards, The GBEP Secretariat | The Indigenous Agriculture Summit: A Recap By: Emily Duncan, Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Regina I was fortunate to have the opportunity to attend the Indigenous Agriculture Summit in Regina, Saskatchewan, on Treaty 4 territory on November 27th and 28th, 2025. The event was sponsored by Farm Credit Canada and presented an engaging line-up of speakers, panel discussions, and breakout sessions focused on sharing stories of successful Indigenous agri-food entrepreneurs, environmental recovery, pathways towards reconciliation through agri-food, and building collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous agri-food stakeholders. The conference was organized by the National Circle for Indigenous Agriculture and Food (NCIAF), a non-governmental organization which was launched in February 2024 and grew out of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. Their work focuses on ensuring that Indigenous Nations have a seat at the table when it comes to issues of agriculture and food in Canada. They also aim to serve as a ‘one-stop shop’ to address capacity issues and coordination of services for Indigenous agri-food producers. The NCIAF serves to build relationships between academia, industry, and government and aims to build connections focused on projects. They have launched 64 projects across Canada, and several were featured at the Indigenous Agriculture Summit. The conference was excellently organized and included a variety of informative breakout sessions that explored the background and on-going work of this growing organization. | Recent publications from network members Cameron, G.
