Good Call Action Series

Round 3 Registration Coming in the New Year!

Making, receiving and responding to calls about patient care can be stressful and complicated. The Good Call Action Series was created locally by Physicians, Nurses, Clerks, Allied Health and other Support Staff as an opportunity for teams to test their ideas to improve their call experience.

The Action Series teaches you tools and techniques you can use right away and apply to other problems in the future. Each area has unique challenges and the best people to identify opportunities for improvement are the ones who are doing the work.

PQI Alum Events 2024

This past year the PQI Alum team hosted 2 in-person events. It was so nice to see you in person!

  • 20 Alum attended our September event in Parksville
  • 15 Alum attended our October event in Victoria

We also held an interdisciplinary summit in June around the creation of the "Well Planned" Action Series focusing on improving the processes around medical goals of discharge. The Summit event was led by Alum to generate content for the Action Series. Of the 34 attendees, there were 21 Physicians.

We thank you for your involvement and contributions and look forward to seeing more of you in 2025!

Moments of Spread

Reducing length of hospital stay while providing quality care

Following the success of the initial project at Victoria General Hospital, which reduced inpatient length of stay and increased parent comfort in managing childhood asthma, the initiative has expanded to all four pediatric admitting sites on Vancouver Island (Cowichan District, Nanaimo, Comox Valley, and Campbell River Hospitals). The project introduced an asthma care bundle, including a standardized discharge checklist and an inpatient asthma pathway with a nurse-led bronchodilator wean. Using a “wedge and spread” implementation model, a pediatrician and nurse champion were appointed at each site. Monthly meetings have allowed teams to share insights, discuss local adaptations, and address successes and challenges. The asthma bundle has been adjusted to meet the specific needs of each site, with personalized implementation plans. Initial asthma case numbers have been lower than expected at some sites but are slowly picking up. All sites have now adopted the bundle, with more cases anticipated during the upcoming winter season. Ongoing feedback from healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers is helping to refine the interventions. This project has been a great opportunity for pediatric teams across the island to collaborate, learn and support each other.

Dr. Marie-Noelle Trottier-Boucher,

Pediatrician, Victoria, Sending Site Lead

I was able to participate in the Pediatric Asthma SQI Project this year and it was so much fun to continued involvement with QI work. While we made meaningful changes in asthma care for kids within Nanaimo, the more significant impact was the engagement with colleagues in other communities. In pediatrics, we've been facing significant HR challenges, which can often lead to siloing between communities. The project allowed me to connect with colleagues in other communities and understand the challenges they face. This is the beauty of working on projects across communities, sites, and areas. I truly feel that the way forward in healthcare is collaboration, communication, and QI projects are a to fosters these relationships. I am grateful to have been involved.

Dr. Kelly Cox,

Pediatrician, Nanaimo, Recieving Site Lead

What is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion involves giving yourself the same compassion you’d show a friend when you’re struggling or feeling badly about yourself.  It means being supportive when you’re facing a life challenge, feel inadequate, or make a mistake and learning how to comfort and care for yourself in difficult moments.

Take the Self-Compassion Quiz and check out out Dr. Kristin Neff’s website for self-compassion and mindfulness resources.
