Read on for more! | Beat the Heat We had a warm weekend here in Nanaimo and it is expected to be a hot, dry summer. Make sure you are prepared and watch for extreme heat warnings. What Is Extreme Heat? Extreme heat happens when both daytime and nighttime temperatures keep rising and are much higher than usual for the season. In the City of Nanaimo, extreme heat is defined by three levels: - Tier 1: Yellow Warning - Two or more consecutive days with daytime highs of 29 - 31°C or warmer and nighttime temperatures that don’t drop below 14 - 15°C.
- Tier 2: Orange Warning- Daytime temperatures exceed 29 - 31°C or warmer, and overnight temperatures don't drop below 14 - 15°C for 3 or more consecutive days.
- Tier 3: Red Warning - Declared when the Tier 2 conditions exist along with substantive day-over-day temperature increases for 3 or more days. These conditions indicate a very high public health risk due to dangerous temperatures.
Extreme heat is more than just uncomfortable - it is dangerous and is responsible for the highest number of weather-related deaths each year.

BEAT THE HEAT | National Indigenous History Month Did you know? June is National Indigenous History Month. It is an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to shape Canada today. Here are some ways you can gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous peoples experiences: - read books by Indigenous authors
- attend events and community gatherings
- watch films or performances by Indigenous filmmakers and performers
- listen to music by Indigenous artists
- follow First Nations, Inuit and Métis creators on social media

MORE INFORMATION | Nanaimo Recycles Car Trunk Sale This Saturday, head over to Nanaimo North Town Centre from 9 am to 2 pm for the first Car Trunk Sale of the year! If you are looking for a bargain or a unique buy, this event is for you! 150 vendors will be selling used items from the trunk of their cars in Nanaimo North Town Centre's south parking lot off Rutherford Road. This free to attend reuse event aims to give unwanted household items a longer lease on life and to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. If you can't make it to this one, no worries! Another one will take place on August 22 at VIU. MORE INFO | | Family Fun Night! Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to Maffeo Sutton Park on Friday, June 26 from 4:30 to 10:30 pm for an extra special Family Fun Night! This free community event will feature an evening of family-friendly entertainment, live music, activities and a waterfront drone show. As part of the Concerts in the Park series, live entertainment will include performances by Chris Noel and the Burning Bush from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by New Road Echo from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. The evening will also include a community soccer viewing party between New Zealand and Belgium on a large outdoor screen from 8 to 10 p.m. thanks to funding from a Province of BC grant. Following the game, a drone show over the harbour will light up the night sky! The drone show is made possible thanks to sponsorship by The Nanaimo Foundation Stanley de Vos Fund. Due to limited parking at the event, please consider alternative transportation. A complimentary bike valet will be available on site for those who choose to cycle. Donny Boyd and Fine Company is an eclectic group of seasoned players from the Nanaimo area who taste in music ranges from the harder rock of Collective Soul, Sloan and 54-40 to the softer blues-based music of Tom Petty, ZZ Top, America, The Beatles and even Roy Orbison. Along with helping to conserve our water supply by reducing water usage through stage 3 watering restrictions, make sure you are doing your part to reduce the risk of wildfire. Here are some things from FireSmart™ BC that you can do to reduce your risk: - Move combustables (firewood, propane, patio furniture, toys, etc.) at least 10 m away from your house
- Keep your lawn at least 10 cm or shorter
- Trim tree limbs so they are at least 2 m above the ground
- Keep your gutters clear of leaves and other debris
- Clean up lawn debris - dead leaves, branches, etc.
- Make an evacuation plan
- Have a grab-and-go bag packed
- Sign up for Voyent Alert!, the City's emergency alert system

FIRESMART™ BC | Curbside Audit Program: Gold Stars for Blue Carts Our Sanitation team has selected 100 residents across Nanaimo to participate in our Gold Star pilot project. From June 22 to September 30 trained staff will be connecting with the selected residents to help change recycling challenges into gold star successes. Participants whose blue recycling carts are well-placed and contamination-free for three random visits during the project, will be awarded a gold star. Of course, everyone, not just project participants, can learn more about recycling using the What Goes Where wizard found on the Nanaimo Recycles app and the City website. WHAT GOES WHERE | | Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week? Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. For more information on Nanaimo construction projects, visit the current Construction page on the City's website. - The eastbound lanes of Townsite Rd (travelling towards Terminal Avenue) will be closed between Holly Avenue and Terminal Avenue from 7am to 3pm, with detours in place. BC Transit Route 72 will be affected, refer to RDN Transit website for more details.
- Third St between Howard Ave and Pine St is closed 24 hrs per day until August 13. Detours are in place.
- Single lane alternating traffic and, at times, eastbound lane closures on Jingle Pot Rd at the intersection of Holland Rd Eastbound traffic watch for possible detour using Holland Rd and Ashlee Rd.
- Single lane alternating traffic on Departure Bay Rd between Doctors Rd and Strongitharm Ave. Expect delays.
- Expect width restrictions on the north side of Hammond Bay Rd between McGirr Rd and Kenwill Dr and single lane alternating traffic at the Brickyard Rd intersection while crews work on the installation of a new sidewalk and cycle lane.
- The entrance to Metral Dr from Mostar Rd will experience road closures Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm as FortisBC constructs a natural gas main. Traffic control and detours will be in place.

When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Remember that construction zone speed limits are 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted.
