HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that compromises the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infections and disease. Testing supports early diagnosis, treatment, better health outcomes, and reduces the likelihood of transmission in the community. June 27, 2026, was HIV Testing Day in Saskatchewan.
SHA is committed to providing equitable care by making HIV testing simpler, and more accessible. HIV Self-testing Kits are a convenient option. There are now 124 HIV Self-testing Kit sites throughout the province.
HIV Self-testing kits reduce barriers by enabling patients to collect a sample and complete the test on their own. Once complete, if the test is positive, an SHA provider can offer individualized support to connect the client to care in a private setting.
Leaders in Primary Care and Mental Health and Addictions should consider how self-testing kits will support the communities they serve by ensuring clear pathways to care for individuals in their clinical environment. Apply to become a distribution location using the HIV Self-test Kit Application Form (SHA 0561).
