What Factors Can Public Health Actors Consider to Facilitate the Borrowing of a Public Policy?

When public health actors propose policy options to policy makers to address public health problems, they may include in their proposals policies that have proven effective in other jurisdictions - in other words, they may recommend borrowing these policies.

This document:

  • presents a list of factors that facilitate the borrowing of public policies;
     
  • describes how public health actors can mobilize these factors when borrowing is a relevant option.

This publication aims to inform ongoing discussions on public health workforce planning and capacity building in Canada. You will find:

  • recent data on programs and students enrolled in and graduating from university-based public health programs in Canada (2022 data collection conducted by the NCCHPP and the NCC for Methods and Tools);
     
  • a recap of key findings from four previous data collections conducted since 2005 on these programs;
     
  • an overview of pan-Canadian initiatives developed for public health workforce planning in Canada.

Towards a HiAP Approach for Canada’s Federal, Provincial and Territorial Jurisdictions?

This document aims to clarify what Health in All Policies (HiAP) is, and what can be expected from it in the Canadian policy context. HiAP is a policy instrument that articulates a comprehensive vision of health and supports coordinated intersectoral action to improve the social determinants of health. Federal, provincial, and territorial governments could adopt a HiAP policy framework to ensure that health is more systematically considered in all public policies under their respective jurisdictions, beyond health care.
