PKD Clinic Model Opens in Surrey

A new clinical model of care for patients with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) was formally launched in Surrey this May – the first of its kind in BC. PKD is a genetic disorder that causes cysts to form in the kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure.

Building on the provincial Kidney Care Clinic model, the Surrey PKD Clinic uses a team-based approach, bringing together nephrologists, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and allied health professionals. The team’s work is guided by evidence-informed clinical pathways and treatment algorithms.

Kidney Care Committee Update

Twice a year, the provincial Kidney Care Committee (KCC), with the support of BC Renal Agency statisticians, produces a report on key clinical indicators. The latest KCC Indicator Report shows encouraging progress on a number of measures. Most significant is the rise in the number of pre-emptive transplants to a new high of 29 for the six-month period ending March 31. Over the previous ten years the average was 18 pre-emptive transplants per six-month period. In the article this month:
