Spotlight on…

Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park

Where the Saguenay Fjord meets the St. Lawrence River, this protected marine area boasts more than 2,200 species!

Beluga: the star of it all

The St. Lawrence Estuary Beluga is the only whale that lives year-round in the area. During the 20th century, this endangered species experienced a significant decline.

There was great public demand to protect the beluga whale. As a result, the marine park was created in 1998. This was thanks to the governments of Canada and Quebec, along with partner organizations.

Even more marine protection

A big announcement happened in March 2025 after a public consultation process. The governments of Canada and Quebec have committed to expanding the marine park!

The expansion would include all the important areas where beluga whales live. The St. Lawrence Estuary would be better protected; it would nearly triple in size, covering 4,500 km².
