Safety capsule: A stabilized approach

A stabilized approach - VFR is defined as follows by Transport Canada.

On the correct final approach course:

  • Briefings and checklists completed;
  • The aircraft must be in the proper landing configuration suitable for the wind and runway conditions;
  • Appropriate power settings applied;
  • Maximum rate of descent of 1,000 feet per minute;
  • Speed between + 10 / -5 knots from the reference speed;
  • Only small course and pitch changes are required;
  • Stable by 200 feet above ground;

Note: If stability is not established at 200 feet AGL, a go-around must be executed.

For pilots planning to fly to RVA Les Ailes du Nord at Les Bergeronnes aerodrome (CTH3), here is a short video showing an approach on the 10 in a Diamond DA40. It's a short runway (1,500'), so negotiate with caution. But as this video shows us, with a good stabilized approach, it can be done safely.

The whole will end on a note of dancing evening...

Airworthiness Directive CF-2023-50: Diamond DA-40, DA-40D and DA-40F, Landing Gear

Transport Canada has received several in-service reports of cracking, and in some cases fracture, of the NLG leg at the pivot pin ref D41-3223-10-00_1. The investigation revealed that these failures were due to a fatigue crack.

Transport Canada has issued an Airworthiness Directive (CF-2023-50) to address this condition. A copy of this Airworthiness Directive is available by clicking HERE

The RVA de la Tortue will fill the empty stomachs of children at school

Lac-à-la-Tortue is an airport (CSL3) and a hydrobase (CSU7). This is also where the first commercial flight was made in 1919 with La Vigilance, a flying boat Curtiss HS-2L. (Now Manitoba folks will say they were the first in 1920, but theirs was the first commercial passenger flight.)

Thus, the RVA of July 8 last attracted aircraft on land and on the lake. About forty pilots with their passengers came for a cordial hot dog, that is to say about thirty planes, 4 gyrocopters and half a dozen seaplanes.

As I drove east towards Lac-à-la-Tortue on Highway 40, the conditions were foggy! And upon arriving at the site, the cloud cover was 1,100 feet with a few “holes” allowing people flying VFR above the layer (OTT), to squeeze through for a landing. Better weather might have increased the number somewhat, but the event was still a success.

The money received for hot dogs, water/pop or a bag of potato chips at a dollar each or T-shirts at $20, ultimately amounts to $1,500. This amount will be used by a local school so that children have breakfast and do not come to class with empty stomachs.

Thank you Aero Atelier and Bel Air Aviation for organizing this event and of course a big thank you to all the volunteers, pilots and passengers!

Airmedic takes one last step before completing the transaction process

The entities of the Airmedic Group Inc. place themselves under the protection of the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (the “ CCAA ”) with a view to finalizing the sale or investor solicitation process. This approach will ensure the sustainability and continue the growth of the company.

In this context, the air medical transport company has reached an agreement with its main secured creditors in order to allow the company to continue its operations without interruption.

For more than a year, Airmedic Group has been seeking to diversify its shareholding by targeting strategic organizations adapted to the health ecosystem and more particularly in front-line interventions in air transport.

“Airmedic is a thriving business and an essential link in the healthcare system. The implementation of a transaction in the coming weeks will allow us to focus on our development and growth projects, all for the benefit of all stakeholders and the population of Quebec. commented the CEO, Ms. Sophie Larochelle
