THE RANKIN REPORT

Spring Legislature Recap

Dear Timberlea-Prospect Residents,

The Spring session of the Legislature ended on Friday, April 5th. I was pleased to see several of our ideas come to fruition with legislation to end bracket creep, introduce a school lunch program, and fund continuous glucose monitors.

Regrettably, a key apiece of environmental legislation, the Costal Protection Act, was replaced with a guide that offers suggestions for costal property owners to use, at their own discretion, to safeguard against the hazards and risks of the ocean and climate related events to their property.

Without the strength of legislation, poor decisions will continue to impact properties, neighbours, our community, and our pristine coastline. After a year of devastating climate change events in our own province, it’s difficult to understand why this legislation was not wholeheartedly proclaimed.

During this session, I also had the opportunity to focus on some of the local needs of Timberlea-Prospect and call attention to the respective ministers on critical issues for our riding.

I highlighted the concerns of Prospect residents to the minister of Public Works and emphasised the cumulative impact of the proposed extensive expansion development of residential, commercial, and industrial projects will mean to Prospect communities.

Strategic planning and the scope of the traffic study that is underway must consider the enormous impact accelerated growth will have on Prospect communities and ensure the infrastructure required to support this development is included in the planning and implemented.

While I recognize the need for more housing, I am concerned about the volume of increased traffic on Prospect Road which is why I have secured a traffic study to potentially create another entrance in, even with existing traffic volumes.

Upon hearing that HRM will consider a proposal for over 5000 more units I asked the province to not override the process and unilaterally approve it. I am disappointed they won’t rule it out.

I have also been actively engaged with Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development regarding the need for additional schools in the Timberlea-Prospect riding and I am working to secure a commitment for a new school in the capital plan for our area.

Please reach out to my office if you have questions.

Best wishes,

Iain Rankin

Addressing Overcrowded Classrooms

I am pleased to report that my letter requesting a meeting with the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development has been successful, resulting in a meeting.

In my letter sent to Minister Druhan in January, I expressed the concerns raised by constituents regarding the overcrowded schools in our area and the pressing necessity for a new school.

Regrettably, the Nova Scotia School Capital Plan presently lacks provision for a new school in Timberlea, despite the notable surge in population.

Further updates on the meeting will follow.

Community Spotlight

Donald and Joleen Gordon

More land is now protected in the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes thanks to Donald and Joleen Gordon.

In November 2023, Donald and Joleen signed a conservation easement to protect 109 acres of their property forever, while still allowing them to enjoy a place that has been precious to them for more than fifty years.

This is great news for the community.
