Check out the UBC website for more updates.

STAYING HEALTHY

1. Stay informed by checking accurate sources

Take what you see on social media with a grain of salt. Instead, stay informed by regularly checking these official sources:

2. Express how you're feeling

Continue to reach in on each other to make sure your friends and classmates are managing through some of the challenging aspects of social distancing. Talk to supportive people you know, and be open about how you’re feeling. Talking about your fears can help you process your thoughts and emotions.

3. Stay healthy & practice good hygiene

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Reduce physical contact with others
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Sneeze and cough into your upper sleeve
  • Avoid large crowds and events
  • Eat healthy and stay active

4. Manage your stress levels

Use coping strategies that have worked for you in the past, or get ideas for new strategies to try:

Need to talk to a mental health professional? Call Empower Me at 1-844-741-6389 for free confidential counselling 24/7 in person, or by phone, video chat, or e-counselling. For more information on how to access mental health support on and off campus, visit the Health and Wellbeing page on the Student Services website.

The AMS Foodbank is still open during this isolation period for students in need, but with reduced hours: Mondays from 10:00am-2:00pm, and Thursdays from 2:00pm-6:00pm.

KEEPING UP WITH ONLINE KIN CLASSES

1. Treat it like a 'real' course

Online courses are flexible and conform to your schedule, but don't put your lectures & assignments off indefinitely!

2. Hold yourself accountable

Set weekly goals! If you're having trouble, pair up with your peers to check in with you as an accountability partner.

3. Practice time management

Set up a schedule to make coursework and lectures a part of your weekly routine. If you get bored or easily distracted, try time-blocking by giving yourself a certain amount of time for each task before moving on to the next one. Your phone's timer app is great for this!

4. Create routine and organization

Creating routine is as easy as setting up your very own study space. Make sure you:

  • Have a high-speed internet connection
  • Stay organized -- have the required books, materials, and software for the course
  • Have headphones for lectures & discussions

5. Eliminate distractions

Try turning off your cell phone to stay focused! Easily distracted by browsing? There are plenty of apps like Cold Turkey or Freedom that will block app or website distractions like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

6. Figure out your learning style

Are you a morning person? A night owl? Plan your day accordingly! Listen to your body to maximize your energy and your learning outcomes.

Don't forget to think about your learning style too -- what types of information do you find easiest to remember? Are you a visual or audio-based learner? Fit some time into your schedule to review course content in your preferred medium.

7. Leverage your network

Meeting with a peer online to go over content is also a great way to stay motivated to study.

Got questions about the course material? Email your professors and your TAs with questions, or to set up virutal office hour meetings.

Concerned about classes? During this time, you can reach the KIN Advising Office by emailing kin.advising@ubc.ca, or by setting up a meeting via Skype. Scroll to the bottom of the KIN Advising Office page for more.

MEET YOUR FELLOW KINNERS x

Maddison Chow

Fifth year, Health Sciences stream

"Thankfully I have been paired with exceptional mentors who have listened to my interests and created a personalized plan for my education in the Indigenous Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program (IURMP). Their work unites my history with my educational passions, while showing tangible and direct impact on the Indigenous community – as a result, this research is very important and dear to my heart."

Fourth year, Health Sciences stream

"To me people are people – we are all different in our own ways, so to exclude someone because of something that makes them unique was absurd. Because of this, I thought it was especially important to implement the [SOBC] program in Elementary schools to instill values of inclusiveness and acceptance in our younger generations."

KIN NEWS

Active Kids High School Competitive Gymnastics Program

On February 22nd Active Kids hosted our the Annual High School Gymnastics Invitational at the UBC Osborne Centre. We invited 5 local clubs and high schools for a friendly competition leading into the BC High School Sports System Provincials. 50 athletes were in attendance and a great time was had by all.

We'd like to thank our student coaches and volunteers, our partners and staff, all the parents, and all especially all the athletes!

Qualifying Active Kids High School Gymnastics Competitive team athletes went to Victoria, BC from March 4th-7th to participate in the BC High School Sports System Provincials Gymnastics Competition. While all athletes train with Active Kids, they individually represent their local high school. We are very proud of all the athletes for their stellar accomplishments this year, as they successfully represented themselves, their school, and our program.
