COMING UP AT COUNCIL

Public Hearing: 37707 Second Avenue

Tuesday, February 7 at 6 p.m.

A Public Hearing is being held for the proposed rezoning of 37707 Second Avenue from Light Industrial (I-1) to a Comprehensive Development Zone No. 104 (CD-104) in order to align the property zoning with the Official Community Plan designation.

GAS LEAK AFFECTING RESIDENTS IN NORTH YARDS CONTAINED

A gas leak that caused a road closure on Government Road and an evacuation of residents of 39884 Government Road has been contained as of 3:30 p.m. today. 

Emergency personnel were on the scene in the area of No Name Road in response to a gas leak resulting from excavation work. The 9.1.1. call came in at 10:49 a.m. FortisBC crews worked on-site to cap the gas leak until it was contained.

FortisBC has confirmed that the gas leak has been capped and there are no further public safety concerns.

DISTRICT FACILITIES AVAILABLE DURING COLDER TEMPERATURES

Come inside to hang out, warm up, or enjoy a variety of indoor activities at District facilities this weekend during the current cold spell. 

Squamish Public Library hours:

  • Monday, Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday to Thursday: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Brennan Park Recreation Centre hours:

  • Monday – Friday 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.*
  • Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

*Office opens at 8 a.m. 

The 55 Activity Centre hours:

  • Tuesday 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
  • Thursday 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The Extreme Weather Program is available for the most vulnerable in our community and offers a number of emergency overnight shelter beds. Those needing shelter should head to Under One Roof before 7 p.m. (37871 Third Avenue).

Installing a Heat Pump? Don’t forget to get a Building Permit! A Building Permit is required when installing, altering or modifying heating, plumbing or air-conditioning systems.

Where can heat pumps be located? You can find this information in the Zoning Bylaw under section 4.49 Outdoor Appliances as follows: 

4.49 OUTDOOR APPLIANCES (Bylaw 2824, 2021)

(a) No outdoor appliance shall be located in a side yard.
(b) Heat pumps may be located in a front or rear setback if access is not impeded and either noise-dampening equipment (e.g., an acoustic barrier) is installed to minimize noise, or the model has a sound power rating of less than 60 decibels.

ZERO WASTE TIP OF THE WEEK

Did you know? Newer (7 years old or younger) computers, tablets, cell phones, and other electronic devices and accessories can be donated to the Hotspot Community Bookstore & Computer Lab, located at the Squamish Welcome Centre at 38027 Cleveland Ave. As of 2023, only relatively new electronics will be accepted for donation. Just drop by the storefront and a staff member or volunteer will show you where to bring your donation. 

Donation hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Zero Waste Education Workshops

Since 2017, AWARE has delivered FREE Zero Waste Education Workshops in classrooms throughout the region on behalf of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District. The Zero Waste Education Workshops are designed to be interactive, fun and engaging, with students learning practical waste reduction and sorting skills that can be easily integrated into everyday routines.

These workshops will initially be offered to Grade 4, 7, and 10 classes. Depending on uptake and availability, sessions may be opened up to other Grades. Workshops are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Renew your dog licence today and save!

All dogs must be registered within 30 days of moving to Squamish and all dogs over eight weeks must be licensed. 

Your dog licence fee enables Animal Control to offer services such as reuniting lost and found dogs with their owners, providing doggie bags and dispensers for public use and helping us manage our adoption program. 

Get your dog’s licence before January 31 to qualify for the discounted rate.

We've updated our Development Review! Please note previous links to developments will no longer be available. Our new Development Review now offers active developments (new and in progress) as well as historical developments (completed development permit applications and rezonings from 2017).

Latest additions for Development Review:

Requests for a public meeting must be made within the first 21 calendar days of a project’s launch in the Development Review. If a combination of 10 separate website-based, emailed or written requests are received by the District, then the applicant will be required to hold a Public Information Meeting regarding their proposed development.

National Lifeguard

Beginning February 13

Train to be a lifeguard with this 44-hour course covering teamwork, leadership, communication, and risk prevention. This course is a requisite for anyone seeking employment at swimming pools in B.C. Participants must be 15 years old by the last day of the course and have completed Bronze Cross and hold a valid Standard First Aid.

Family Storytime

February 3 and 4, 2 - 4 p.m.

Family Storytime is a fun, active half hour for everyone. We read books, sing songs, dance, and much more. Babies to pre-schoolers and their caregivers are welcome.

Registration is required for each storytime and opens at 9 am every Sunday.

Playing With Words: A Writing Workshop with Linda Simpson

February 8 and 15, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Through accessible, and inspiring exercises, you will learn essential structure ingredients, how to generate ideas and some writing hacks. Further develop a compelling, original voice and transform your writing with focused exercises. Learn to listen to your world and use everyday experience as a catalyst to create content. Play with words and shape some poetry. Stimulate observation skills and nurture your curiosity to create endless writing opportunities. Included will be some brain training exercises to fire up your ingenuity.
