Bird Nesting Season

In B.C., birds and their nests are protected under the provincial Wildlife Act and the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act which makes it an offence to harm, disturb or destruct nests, eggs, or young. In Squamish, the bird nesting period is from late March to late August.

All vegetation disturbance should occur outside of this period. If vegetation removal must occur during this period, it should be ensured that no nests are present.

Wildlife Emergence: A Clean Site is a Safe Site

A reminder to developers that as bears begin to emerge from hibernation, please ensure job sites are free of wildlife attractants.

If you’re building in bear country, you can prevent wildlife conflicts by:

  • Storing food and garbage, and removing any potential attractants including food wrappers, coffee cups and other food-scented items.
  • Keeping vehicles completely closed up.

To report wildlife sightings or encounters, call the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1-877-952-7277. For more tips, visit WildSafeBC.com.

Notice of Grant of Assistance

British Columbia Housing Management Commision – Pursuant to Section 24 of the Community Charter, the Council of the District of Squamish hereby gives notice of its intention to grant assistance to the British Columbia Housing Management Commission (BC Housing) by allowing use of land at 37956 Loggers Lane (Xwu’nekw Park) for six months for one dollar.

Site Preparation: 39900 Government Road and Centennial Way

Site preparation involving tree removal has begun at the site of the proposed supportive and affordable housing development currently in planning and permitting with the District of Squamish.

Tree removal is expected to take approximately two weeks and is taking place now to avoid bird nesting season. An Environmental Monitor will oversee this work to ensure nests are not present.

What to expect → The informal access path through the site will be closed during tree work and reopened afterward; Temporary fencing will be installed; Brief, intermittent traffic delays are possible as trucks enter/exit the site; Tree stumps will remain in place for now.

Landfill Expansion Investigative Drilling

Investigative drilling for the Squamish Landfill expansion project is ongoing, with forest and vegetation clearing, followed by gravel road and drill pad construction expected through April.

Impacts include:

  • Increased truck traffic at the landfill
  • Trail closures in the area of clearing
  • Increased dust due to truck traffic

The contractor will have public safety measures in place during construction. Please obey all signage and use caution in the area – and please do NOT enter the work areas at any time.

Help Wildlife Stay Wild – Lock Your Totes

Bears are coming out of hibernation and an unlocked tote is an invitation to dinner. When we take action, we help keep bears wild and out of trouble.

Bylaw will be checking totes that are visible from the road over the next few weeks to ensure they are locked. Each infraction of the Wildlife Attractant Bylaw may result in a warning, before resulting in a fine of $230 per day.

Did you know → As per the Wildlife Attractant Bylaw, totes must be locked at all times, even if empty, and only placed curbside and unlocked on the morning of collection day between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. – not the night before.
