Aviation Safety Capsule: 122.35 - a number to remember

In fact, 122.35 is not just a number. It is also the MF frequency in effect at Trois-Rivières airport (CYRQ) ... since July 2018.

Since that date, there have been more than 100 air incidents, all caused by the fact that some pilots had not tuned to the MF frequency of 122.35 MHz at Trois-Rivières.

Had they consulted their CFS? Were their CFS or aeronautical charts expired?

Here is what the CFS says:  MF UNICOM 12-01Z O / T 122.35 5 NM 3200 ASL (RAC 602.98)

Spread the word before the holes in the cheese line up and there is an unfortunate accident.

Transport Canada announces strengthening of requirements for emergency locator transmitter on board aircraft

Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced changes to the Canadian Aviation Regulations to require the use of digital emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) on board aircraft over Canada.

The new reinforced requirements will come:

  • improve passenger safety by increasing the likelihood of receiving distress signals;
  • enhance the effectiveness of search and rescue operations by providing rapid, reliable and accurate position information to search and rescue services;

  • reduce false alarms and unnecessary deployment of search and rescue resources;

  • harmonize the requirements for emergency locator transmitter with international standards;

  • Respond to a recommendation from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which called for the installation of digital emergency locator transmitters on all Canadian registered aircraft and foreign aircraft operated in Canada.

Under the previous regulations, Canadian aircraft were required to be equipped with a similar ELT using the frequency of 121.5 MHz. Regulatory changes announced today will require all Canadian aircraft to be equipped with digital ELTs capable of broadcasting simultaneously on the 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz frequencies, with a few exceptions.

The changes will apply to Canadian and foreign registered aircraft operated in Canada, with the exception of gliders, hot air balloons, balloons, airships, ultralight airplanes and gyroplanes.

Commercial air operators have one year from the final publication of the amended regulations in the Canada Gazette, Part II on November 25, 2020, to implement the changes, while recreational aircraft operators have five years to comply.
