Recreation facilities, the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and arenas are open and following province-wide COVID-19 safety protocols. Outdoor amenities remain open for use as well, however please continue to practice physical distancing, hand washing and please stay home if not feeling 100% well.

We want to keep all members of our community healthy and safe. Please note that mask use is now expected in all public areas in City of Nanaimo buildings.

The information collected during REIMAGINE NANAIMO will guide the City on what projects are prioritized for the future in all these areas:

✔️Official Community Plan

✔️Parks, Recreation & Culture plan

✔️Active Sustainable Transportation Plan

✔️Economic Development Strategy

✔️Nanaimo Water Supply Strategic Plan

✔️Climate Action Plan

It is important to take the time to have YOUR SAY in what our future community will look like! Surveys are open until November 30.

Parks, Recreation & Culture Updates

  • Fall & Winter registration is open and ongoing with new programs being added regularly. Please note, this weekend's new provincial order are for the Metro Vancouver area and do not impact Vancouver Island at this time.
  • Please register for drop-in programs as early as 72 hours in advance. Drop-in schedules are available for viewing.
  • The Rotary Bowl is getting some much-needed track repairs, including the removal of several tree roots. It will be about 2-3 weeks before the new rubber surfacing can be replaced. Please avoid these sections of the track until repairs are completed.
  • The Living Wall at Oliver Woods Community Centre is coming along. Staff installed about 550 living wall bags that weigh between 70 to 100 pounds each. The next phase will be the planting. Stay tuned for more updates as the project nears completion.
  • The one-month Active Passes are back! Purchase yours at Bowen Complex, Oliver Woods Community Centre, the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre or online (found under the Punch Pass Tab when you are logged into your account).  Child $30, Student & Senior $42 and Adult $56 for unlimited swimming, skating, gym & select drop in sports.

Social Planning Grants

The City of Nanaimo is now accepting applications for the 2021 Social Planning Grants and this year there is an additional $30,000 in funding available for community wellness and substance use response programs. The Social Planning Grants are an important part of the support that the City provides to our partners in addressing issues related to social equity and community well-being. Grant application deadline is 4:00 pm, Monday, December 7, 2020.

Remembrance Day Ceremonies

This year's Remembrance Day ceremonies will be virtual. On Wednesday, November 11 tune into Shaw TV Nanaimo at 10:30 am to view the ceremony. And, follow Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10 Nanaimo Facebook page for an event agenda.

This unique video memorial project presented by Vancouver Island University reminds us of the Nanaimo soldiers who gave their lives during the First and Second World War.

Will Your Commute be Affected?

Check out the City's Current Construction Projects page for up-to-date information on City construction projects. Here are a few projects that may affect your commute:

  • Bowen Road construction is almost done, with road markings to be completed soon! In the meantime, please drive slowly and respect temporary road markings. Thank you for your patience while we wrap things up!

  • Metral Drive, between Turner Road and Godfrey Road, has been reduced to gravel and underground utility work is underway. Traffic on the gravel road will be limited to residents only. Commuters are encouraged to plan additional time to navigate the area or preferably, to avoid the area completely by detouring on the Island Highway. Expect construction to be active Monday-Saturday, 7am-7pm.
