Welcome the new BMS Academic Program Manager & BMS Communications Assistant!

Tim Flanagan, Academic Program Manager

Tim joins the BMS team after two years with Arts Advising, where he worked on students records management, the Arts Interdisciplinary Studies program, and curriculum support. An alumnus of the UBC–Sciences Po dual BA program and UBC’s International Relations major, his academic interests – labour relations, indigeneity and settler colonialism, history of governance – have never fit neatly within disciplinary boundaries. If he’s not on a long walk to find the best coffee on campus, you’ll probably find him with his nose buried in the latest Nordic crime novel.

Jueun Park, Communications Assistant

Jueun is a third-year BMS student with interests in digital arts, including photography and film, and a passion for using multimedia storytelling for connecting communities. As the Communications Assistant, BMS Peer and Academic Mentor and a member of the Media Studies Student Association, she is beyond excited to continue supporting the students’ academic journey throughout Media Studies and share inspiring stories from the BMS community.

BMS Peer & Academic Mentorship: First Virtual Session!

Friday, Oct. 8, 2021 | 10:00am - 11:00am (PST)

Hey first-year BMS Students, we're super excited to announce that the BMS Peer & Academic Mentorship program is returning this year! The program was first launched in the 2020/2021 school year to support first-year students in BMS by hosting monthly virtual mentorship sessions on BMS core courses.

Having completed your first three weeks of classes, you may have questions about your courses as you adjust to your first year at university, or are just generally curious about the opportunities you have as a UBC BMS student.

This is why the topic of the first session is “Meet your mentors! #AMA (Ask Mentor Anything)" where your six mentors will be sharing valuable academic and extra-curricular tips and also answer any questions you may have about your academics, passion projects, and opportunities. Questions that were submitted beforehand here will also be answered.

Attending your peer mentorship sessions also provides a great opportunity to connect with your peers and BMS students in different years of the program. Your 6 Peer Mentors - Gabrielle, Ky, Teann, Claire, Jueun, and Hui are passionate about supporting your success - they are from all years of the program and have diverse interests within media studies, skills, and hobbies. They look forward to seeing you all there. Don't miss out!

📍 Location: On Zoom. (Zoom details have been sent to your email, please email arts.mediastudies@ubc.ca to retrieve the link to join the session if you didn't receive it.)

Orange Shirt Day 2021

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, as well as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We set this day aside to honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and to look closely and deeply at the legacy and effects the Residential School System has left behind. We encourage everyone to use this time to have important conversations with their families, friends and communities about making reconciliation with Indigenous peoples a reality in BC.
