En-tête Aéro Montréal

Aéro Montréal's mission is to mobilize stakeholders in Quebec's aerospace ecosystem to support its global reach, innovation capacity and growth.

// MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear members, dear partners,

Summer is coming to an end and our students will soon be heading back to school. I'm pleased to announce that the range of aerospace training courses available in Quebec will be expanded this fall.

The Concodia Institute of Aerospace Design and Innovation (CIADI), in collaboration with Concordia University's Continuing Education department, has created two new certificates that are directly related to the challenges we face today. The first focuses on the decarbonization of the aerospace sector, while the other focuses on emerging cybertechnologies.

I'm sharing them with you because all companies in the cluster could benefit from them. Developed in collaboration with industry, these two programs will enable your employees to expand their knowledge in key areas. While the aerospace decarbonization certificate will cover life cycle assessment, sustainable aviation fuels, hydrogen production, storage and use, as well as energy storage and conversion; the cyber technologies certificate will cover artificial intelligence and its applications in aerospace, cybersecurity and big data. Below are the full descriptions of the programs.

The aerospace decarbonization program will start this fall and registration is already open. The program on the application of cybertechnologies is scheduled to start in January 2024.

I urge you to share this information widely as these two programs are aimed at professionals in our ecosystem who want to upgrade their skills, as well as people retraining or young graduates entering the job market.

Reach out to your network and spread the word!

// INTRODUCTORY GUIDES:
   THE DECARBONIZATION OF YOUR BUSINESS

DECARBONIZE YOUR BUILDINGS THROUGH ENERGY MANAGEMENT — SCOPES 1 AND 2

In the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, emission sources are divided into three categories, commonly referred to as scope 1, 2 and 3.

» SCOPE 1 : concerns activities directly controlled by the company and over which it has power. Case in point: the fuels used to heat the building (oil, natural gas, propane, other fuels).

» SCOPE 2 : covers electricity produced by a third party, but consumed by your company. Case in point: In Quebec, it is mainly hydroelectricity. Elsewhere, it could be via coal, oil or natural gas-fired power plants, or with CO2-emitting fossil fuels.

BALANCE SHEET
When measuring the carbon footprint of companies supported by Aéro Montréal's Eco-Responsibility initiative, with COESIO, we notice that nearly 93% of their GHG emissions are due to the energy sources they use.

WAYS TO REDUCE THE CARBON FOOTPRINT?

» In the existing commercial building:

  • conversion to hydroelectricity for space heating (if heated by natural gas or oil);
  • optimization of energy efficiency of building envelope and windows (reduces energy demand);
  • adding a geothermal system, which can also reduce heating needs by 50% (also an economic benefit);
  • heat recovery generated by your activities or those of your neighbors, for example.

» In a new building:

  • multiple design decisions can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of your project, such as the choice of materials, their origin, the choice of heating system, water heater, windows, etc.

DECARBONIZE YOUR BUSINESS THROUGH SUPPLIER CHOICE — SCOPE 3

» SCOPE 3 : (referred to in the previous capsule) lists the sources of emissions upstream and downstream of a company's activities, over which it has seemingly little control. However, the carbon footprint of your suppliers concerns you indirectly, since by procuring their products and services, you endorse their business practices, including their greenhouse gas emissions.

BALANCE SHEET
For companies, the supply chain accounts for up to 80% of their carbon footprint.

WAYS TO REDUCE THE CARBON FOOTPRINT?

»  To take action on the supply chain:

  • choose eco-responsible suppliers, who have gone through the exercise of reducing their carbon footprint (you reduce yours by extension);
  • In the absence of such suppliers, launch ambitious tenders that will pressure collaborators to measure and reduce their carbon emissions.

Canada enacts legislation to fight modern slavery in supply chains

Author : Andrew Pollock

After a journey of more than four years, disrupted by COVID and two national elections, Canada has enacted legislation to combat modern slavery in supply chains.

Bill S-211, an Act to enact the Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act and to amend the Customs Tariff (the Act), passed third reading on May 3, 2023, and upon receiving royal assent will be in force on January 1, 2024. The first reports under the Act are due by no later than May 31, 2024.

The purpose of the Act is to implement Canada’s international commitment to combat forced labour and child labour by imposing reporting obligations on (i) government institutions producing, purchasing or distributing goods in Canada or elsewhere; and (ii) certain business entities producing goods in Canada or elsewhere or importing goods produced outside Canada.
