March 2022 Guild Meeting Reminder

Meeting Date: Monday, March 21st, 2022
Doors Open: 6:30PM for mixing
Meeting: 7:00PM - 9:00PM

This meeting will be held in person and streamed online.

In Person at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver
949 West 49th Ave, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 2T1

Those wishing not to attend the meeting in person, we will be broadcasting on Zoom.  Log in details will be sent on Sunday, March 20th.

The guest lecture for the March VancouverMQG meeting is Laura Loewen.  Laura is a designer and a maker of modern quilts.

Since making her first quilt as a teenager, her style has grown with her eagerness for experimentation. Many of her quilts feature a mix of solid, print, and woven fabrics in a full color spectrum. She has a professional background in interior design and photography and spends her days at home raising her two boys outside Boulder, Colorado.

Discovering Glow: This lecture will take a look into her mind and she will teach us about how she has developed a process for pulling fabrics for a quilt project.  We will learn how she has come to look at color, value, tone, and texture in order to create quilts that glow.

We will get to know her color process when designing a show quilt, why her fabric philosophy is "more is more", and where she looks to find inspiration.

You can check out Laura's work on Instagram here

March Show & Tell Reminder - In Person

If you have recently finished a quilt and would like your quilt to be included in the in person Show & Tell,  when you arrive to the meeting you can register that you would like to show.

Don't forget your quilts!

COURSE: Speed Date with Improv via Zoom

Spend a few hours with Krista Hennebury and learn her fast paced approach to improv quilting.

April 3rd at 10am

Class time: 6.5 hours with 30 minute offline break.

Course Fees: $40 for members who register before March 20th. After March 20th course is $50 for member. Non-members may register for $50.

Think of this class as speed dating with improvisational piecing techniques that include curves and free-cutting. It will be fast-paced and a lot of fun: several techniques are introduced and demonstrated one after the other with very little time to second guess, stress or obsess over perfection.

Every student will end up with a unique, original improv sampler quilt! The focus here is to explore line, shape and happenstance in abstract design, so keep things simply graphic by using solid-coloured fabrics in black, white and one pop of colour. In the afternoon, Krista will share design wall tips to jigsaw the improv elements together, seeking balance and creative design opportunities. Some pre-cutting is required.

Quilt Size: without borders, approximately 20" x 20". Fabric required: 1/2 yard black, 1/2 yard white, FQ colour (all solids or reads-as-solids).

To Register: Contact our Workshop Coordinators, Peg at workshops@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca to register or ask questions. Please e-transfer payment to treasurer@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca
