SUMMER 2021 IS ALL ABOUT ACTION, DIVERSITY, PARTNERSHIP AND SOLIDARITY.

ACTION

Ten field projects will be carried out by 12 Lake Massawippi enthusiasts, including 3 biologists, a geologist and a geomorphologist, accompanied by 3 university students and 4 patrollers.

All projects will be presented in detail in our next newsletters.

DIVERSITY

Due to unprecedented project diversity, the actions are distributed on the lake, in the streams, in the watershed and in the wetlands.

They are shared in analyses and concrete interventions, but also in awareness and communication.

PARTNERSHIP

In terms of public funding, our actions are supported by the Government of Canada, the Government of Quebec, the MRC de Memphrémagog, the Parc régional Massawippi and the 5 riverside municipalities.

This funding is made possible thanks to the generous support of our private donors. Thank you for your support!

SOLIDARITY

Given their diversity and, in some cases, their innovative nature, our projects require this season the field participation of several outside organizations: COGESAF, Ministery of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, Nature Eastern Townships, Corporation de la Rivière Noire, MRC de  Memphrémagog,  Parc régional Massawippi and selected shoreline municipalities.

ORGANIZATION

In an atmosphere of great effervescence, projects are being implemented one after the other at Blue Massawippi.

The hiring of seasonal workers is completed and their arrival on the field, which began on April 23, will last until June 28.

Four of them are already on the job under the direction of our project manager Vincent Lemieux (photo)

FOLLOW-UP

Two major issues have caught our attention this Winter. Where are we now?

AYER'S CLIFF

We can recall that the excavation work, blasting and the erection of buildings aroused the anger of the neighbourhood at Ripplecove. Citizen mobilization and the request of Blue Massawippi forced the municipality to admit that its bylaw went too far. Ayer's Cliff then announced in a press release that it intended to review the entire project with the developer.

Two months later, we still have no indication that negotiations are being undertaken and the major work continues.

NORTH HATLEY

The strategic plan was tabled on April 12, without the basic changes requested by Blue Massawippi being incorporated.

With the exception of a few minor modifications, Blue Massawippi's outreach to North Hatley will only have served to obtain a firm commitment from the current elected officials that they will hold the lake in high regard in all their actions. Good news in the short term, but in the absence of a clear mention in the strategic plan, they will have to be reminded. And hopefully, on the eve of the November elections, the candidates will speak out on this issue.

CURRENT ISSUES

Pollen season.

We have received several inquiries this week regarding the condition of the water and the level of turbidity.

Be reassured, it is only pollen that will settle for a few more weeks on the surface. No contamination, no cyabobacteria.

REMINDER

All boats must be washed before being launched.

It is a matter of life and death for Lake Massawippi and it is the law, applicable in all municipalities along the lake.
