Safety capsule: The spin - would you know what to do to get out of it?

A spin in a small aeroplane is a controlled or uncontrolled manoeuvre in which the aeroplane descends in a helical path while flying in a stalled condition at an angle of attack greater than the angle of maximum lift. Spins result from aggravated stalls in uncoordinated flight. In an aggravated stall, one wing will drop before the other and the nose will yaw in the direction of the low wing. If a stall does not occur, a spin cannot occur.

Types Of Spins

  1. An incipient spin is that portion of a spin from the time the aeroplane stalls and rotation starts, until the spin becomes fully developed. An incipient spin that is not allowed to develop into a fully developed spin is commonly used as an introduction to spin training and spin recovery techniques.
  2. A fully developed spin occurs when the aircraft angular rotation rates, airspeed, and vertical speed are stabilized from turn-to-turn in a flight path that is close to vertical.
  3. A flat spin is characterized by a near level pitch and roll attitude with the spin axis near the C of G of the aeroplane. Recovery from a flat spin may be extremely difficult and, in some cases, impossible.

How to get out?

We recommend that you consult the Transport Canada guide on the spin by clicking HERE

To complement Transport Canada's text, here is what the Cessna 152 and Cessna 172 POHs say:

  1. VERIFY THAT AILERONS ARE NEUTRAL AND THROTTLE IS IN IDLE POSITION
  2. APPLY AND HOLD FULL RUDDER OPPOSITE TO THE DIRECTION OF ROTATION
  3. JUST AFTER THE RUDDER REACHES THE STOP, MOVE THE CONTROL WHEEL BRISKLY FORWARD FAR ENOUGH TO BREAK THE STALL
  4. AS ROTATION STOPS, NEUTRALLIZE THE RUDDER, AND MAKE A SMOOTH RECOVERY FROM THE RESULTING DIVE.

News from one of our partners: A well-received career day at Select Aviation College

On Saturday May 13, on a beautiful sunny day, Collège Select Aviation had the pleasure of welcoming several people from the region and even from Montreal and Toronto for our career day at the Gatineau airport.

The career day was an opportunity to meet us, ask questions about our flight training programs, as well as to visit the college, including our new classrooms, and our aircraft.

We also offered, free of charge, short sessions in our Alsim AL250 simulators with a qualified instructor in order to be able to experience the controls and the realism of the simulated flight.

Visitors also got to see and sit on our aircraft up close, including our Cessna 180 amphibian seaplane and our 2022 PA44 Piper Seminole.

Follow us on our social networks, or write to us at info@selectaviation.com if you would like to be invited to our next career day!

Transport Canada Notice of Proposed Amendment NPA 2023-005: A Message from the President of COPA

Letter from COPA President Mark van Berkel

I am writing to you as a special notice that needs your immediate attention.

Some of you may be aware of a recent NPA 2023-005 (Minimum Visual Meteorological Conditions for VFR flight in Controlled and Uncontrolled Airspace) that has been circulated by Transport Canada as part of the CARAC process. COPA feels that this NPA as currently drafted poses a risk that it will impose unacceptable changes to future regulations that will impact our ability to fly VFR in Canada and place additional training and currency requirements on pilots.

The COPA Technical Committee has reviewed the proposed NPA and has summarized the following key changes for your information as COPA members.
