Compost

Expanded list of compostable items on campus

More items can now be composted in the bright yellow bins around campus. The expanded list of acceptable material includes all organic food, bread, meat and bones, wooden utensils and chopsticks, wax paper, napkins, paper hand towels, coffee filters, tea bags, and containers stamped constable. 

Pizza boxes can also be stacked next to waste sorting stations on the main floors of campus buildings for collection. 

Make sure you stop and check what is compostable before sorting your waste!

Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey

Help UBC create a healthier campus!

 A random sample of UBC students have received an email invitation to participate in the survey and share your thoughts and experiences on a range of health and wellbeing topics.

UBC's Indigenous Strategic Plan

Seeking ideas for UBC's Indigenous Strategic Plan

UBC is in the final stage of developing an Indigenous Strategic Plan, which will guide the University’s Indigenous engagement initiatives for years to come. Your ideas are sought via an online survey. The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. The deadline for responses is December 12. You’re invited to comment on how UBC can become a leading university locally and globally in implementing (i.e. recognizing and respecting) Indigenous peoples’ human rights.

Edible Cannabis

The Government of Canada legalized edible cannabis products in October 2019. This means edible cannabis products will be available in official retail stores by December 2019. Two weeks left to apply for Go Global's first round - we can help shine a light on your options!

December 17 is fast approaching! If you're still trying to figure out where to go next year, why not come chat with a Go Global Advisor or one of our Ambassadors (returned students)? Go Global advising is operating on a drop-in basis until the 17th from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. each weekday, with Ambassadors on hand from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. each day! Stop by UNC 207 during these times or contact us by e-mail. 

Not sure if you want to Go Global yet? We have another deadline in early May, however, we highly recommend you meet with a Go Global advisor to determine which timeline works best for you!

UBCO Fiction Competition

Submissions welcome for UBC Okanagan's annual fiction competition

Authors encouraged to put pen to paper and get creative

Budding writers are urged to submit their entries for the 22nd annual Okanagan Short Story Contest. FCCS is offering cash prizes to the top three stories - $1,000, $400 and $200; the first prize winner also wins a one-week retreat at The Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre in Kelowna. Entries must be received by 11:15 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2020. Submissions will be judged by faculty from the Creative Writing Program, and Okanagan icon, poet, editor, and fiction writer, John Lent.

Dec. 10 - Sixth annual UBC Okanagan Nobel Night

Learn about the 2019 Nobel Prize-winning contributions in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace and economics at Nobel Night. On Tuesday, Dec. 10 a panel of UBC faculty experts in the prize disciplines will decipher the discoveries and achievements that have changed the world this year.

But antibiotics don’t help most respiratory infections, and they can even be harmful. Art Hive

Art Hive returns in 2020 - volunteers needed

Art Hive is now closed for the term.

Want to get involved? The Art Hive is now looking to hire volunteer facilitators for early 2020 with a commitment of 2-4 hours/week. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • greeting all newcomers and inviting participants so they feel welcome
  • providing a pleasant and safe atmosphere to create in; ensuring the area is clean and art supplies are organized when shift ends
  • helping students familiarize themselves with the materials/art supplies provided and informing the Art Hive coordinator when supplies are low or new items are needed
  • giving feedback to the coordinator on successes and challenges, and ways we can improve the experience for participants; keeping track of attendance.
  • providing ideas on special themes the Art Hive can host during the school year

Qualifications

These volunteer positions are opened to all UBCO students. If you have a friendly, open attitude, enjoy being creative, are reliable & organized, and would like to be part of a fun, growing initiative, the Art Hive would love to hear from you. Familiarity with art materials/personal art practice is an asset but not necessary.
