In recent years, governments have begun to consider wellbeing as a measure of success and progress alongside traditional economic measures such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This movement has led to the adoption of strategies and policies which make quality of life or wellbeing a policy priority area in some jurisdictions.

In this special edition, we highlight our recent work on wellbeing policies and include a few other resources of interest.

Webinar Recording – Wellbeing policy in Wales and in Canada

The Canadian Wellbeing Knowledge Network (CWKN) is an emerging initiative of a group of organizations and individuals from public, private, academic, and community sectors with a shared interest in advancing and supporting evidence-informed wellbeing policy approaches in Canada. The NCCHPP is part of this network.

The CKWN held its first in the 2022-23 Wellbeing Policy Webinar Series. This webinar was hosted by the McGill Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy. Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, was joined by a group of Canadian experts to exchange learnings and approaches in moving beyond GDP to prioritize wellbeing and quality of life.

This time-bound project that is building momentum for economic transformation and changing the debate so that economies around the world deliver shared wellbeing for people and planet.

New Zealand’s Wellbeing Budget

This innovative budget, submitted in 2019, that aimed to make happiness of its citizens a priority. It was developed by considering the population wellbeing indicator instead of the GDP.

He Ara Oranga te tarāwaho putanga toiora / He Ara Oranga wellbeing outcomes framework (New Zealand)

This framework describes what ideal wellbeing looks like. It comprises an aspirational vision, twelve wellbeing outcomes, and associated data.

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit: The role of Indigenous knowledge in supporting wellness in Inuit communities in Nunavut (NCCIH)

This fact sheet explores the relevance of Inuit traditional knowledge for health and well-being in Inuit communities, and the potential for Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit to be used as a foundation for health and wellness policy and programs.
