High Streamflow Advisory: Atmospheric River

The River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for Howe Sound and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor including Squamish.

Environment Canada has also issued a Special Weather Statement for Squamish, and the Sea to Sky Highway from Squamish to Whistler.

A strong atmospheric river is forecast to impact coastal British Columbia beginning mid-day on Sunday. Current weather models indicate the initial pulse of heavy precipitation will impact the South Coast late Sunday into Monday and continue through much of the week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast totals for the event (Sunday to Wednesday) include: Howe Sound/Sea to Sky (150–200 mm).

Freezing levels are forecast to rise quickly, reaching up to 3000 m above sea level by Monday. Additional runoff from snowmelt is expected in areas where snow remains on the ground.

Impacts:

  • Prolonged heavy rain on snow combined with mountain snow melt will lead to very enhanced responses in river systems and potential for flooding.
  • Extensive water pooling on roads and wash-outs may occur.
  • Enhanced risk of landslides due to saturation of landscapes.

Stay safe in and around rivers through the region. Be prepared for challenging driving conditions and potential road washouts and check local conditions on DriveBC.ca. Never drive through flood waters or across road washouts.

The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor the conditions and will provide updates as needed.

Stay tuned for updates:

Site Preparation: Cheekeye Phase A-1

The District has issued the required environmental permits for vegetation clearing in the southern portion of the Cheekeye development area (Parcel A-1). Tree clearing is expected to begin as part of the Phase A-1 development work.

For public safety, the clearing area will be temporarily closed to public access while work is underway. Tree falling and heavy equipment will be operating within the site. Trail users should expect temporary closures within the work area and are asked to respect posted signage and barriers.

In Squamish, the songbird nesting season runs from late March to late August. Tree removal during this period requires additional mitigation measures, including pre-clearing bird nest surveys. To reduce risk of disturbing active nests, trees required for development are being removed before the nesting season begins, under the guidance of a Qualified Environmental Professional.

Tree removal is regulated through the District's Tree Management Bylaw, which establishes requirements for tree protection and replacement planting.

Project and contact information can be found at cheekeyedevelopments.ca.

Temporary Trail Impacts: 39900 Government Road and Centennial Way

Due to site preparation and tree clearing the informal access path through the site will be closed during tree work and reopened afterward; Temporary fencing will be installed; Brief, intermittent traffic delays are possible as trucks enter/exit the site; Tree stumps will remain in place for now.

Please follow signage and stay out of closed areas for your safety. Thank you for your patience while this work is complete.

Wildlife Emergence: A Clean Site is a Safe Site

A reminder to developers that as bears begin to emerge from hibernation, please ensure job sites are free of wildlife attractants.

If you’re building in bear country, you can prevent wildlife conflicts by:

  • Storing food and garbage, and removing any potential attractants including food wrappers, coffee cups and other food-scented items.
  • Keeping vehicles completely closed up.

To report wildlife sightings or encounters, call the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1-877-952-7277. For more tips, visit WildSafeBC.com.

Help Wildlife Stay Wild – Lock Your Totes

Bears are coming out of hibernation and an unlocked tote is an invitation to dinner. When we take action, we help keep bears wild and out of trouble.

Bylaw will be checking totes that are visible from the road and this will continue periodically throughout the spring to ensure they are locked. Each infraction of the Wildlife Attractant Bylaw may result in a warning, before resulting in a fine of $230 per day.

Did you know → As per the Wildlife Attractant Bylaw, totes must be locked at all times, even if empty, and only placed curbside and unlocked on the morning of collection day between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. – not the night before.

Learn more about the bylaw at squamish.ca/wildlife.
