A WORD FROM YOUR REGIONAL APPUI

For 2019-2021, l’Appui Montreal is funding $6,800,833 in services for caregivers. In total, that’s 151,478 hours of support that have been accorded to caregivers in 2019-2021. L’Appui makes it a priority to support quality services that are fully aligned with the needs of caregivers.

GROUPE DES AIDANTS DU SUD-OUEST

The GASO is a not-for-profit organization that has been helping caregivers since 1995. Today, it provides services to the areas of Dorval, Lachine, LaSalle, Verdun and the Sud-Ouest. It delivers individual services and group activities to caregivers of seniors. One of its most popular workshops is the health workshop. This activity is designed to help caregivers of seniors expand their knowledge on various health topics and to teach them tricks that they can implement in their everyday lives. The health workshop is hosted by Stéphanie Julien, NDA, a naturopathic practitioner, graduate of ÉENNSQ and member of ANAQ.

In March, the workshop focused on various diets. The activity started with the tasting of an anti-inflammatory health smoothie. Then, a round table was held with the participants so the host could align her presentation with their expectations. Most of the session was dedicated to presentation of information on the topic of the month. The session finished with a discussion and exchange period among the participants. Every participant left with practical information in their hands. Participants really appreciate the content of the workshop and the quality of the presentation.

SEXUALITY AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS

Throughout the various stages of a couple’s life, we may be faced with challenges regarding sexuality. In this article, various issues related to sexuality when one of the partners has cognitive impairments will be discussed, as will a recommendation.

STUDY ON THE CHALLENGES OF CAREGIVING AS PART OF A COUPLE

WE NEED YOU!

Switching from spouse to driver, cook, nurse, accountant – being a caregiver can change the loving relationship when illness arises in a couple. Every caregiver and care receiver experiences it differently depending on their attachment relationship, their personality and their experience.

To better equip the workers who support caregivers and thus enable them to adjust better to the challenges faced by these couples, the Centre collégial d’expertise en gérontologie (CCEG), in partnership with the l’Appui chapters of Centre-du-Québec and Mauricie, has launched a study to build a kit containing tools adapted to couples based on their attachment style.

To achieve this, we need the collaboration of at least 220 caregivers in a couple relationship (with the care receiver) across Quebec. The goal: identify the particular needs of caregivers based on attachment styles and scopes, to intervene more effectively within couple dyads.

We need you...

  • Are you a caregiver who has been in a couple relationship for at least five years with the person you help?
  • Are you retired and over 50 years old?

Participate in this study until October 1, 2019, by completing the questionnaire (in French) at the following link Projet Lien Amoureux or by contacting l’Appui Centre-du-Québec at 819-293-6309 or l’Appui Mauricie at 819-841-0900.

This study is led at the CCEG by Carmen Lemelin (PhD) and Caroline Pelletier (SW, doctoral candidate in gerontology).

PSYCHOLOGICAL CARE: THE ALLY OF THE CAREGIVER AND THIER LOVED ONE IN PALLIATIVE CARE

The psychologist plays an important role in the lives of patients in palliative care and their caregivers. The psychologist helps them experience this stage more serenely, by encouraging them to redefine and strengthen their relationships.

This is the objective that Jean-Marc Duru, palliative care psychologist, strives for when he provides psychological care. Through an account of his almost daily actions, he introduces us to his work.

WHO WE ARE

Founded in 2009, L’Appui pour les proches aidants d’aînés strives to improve the quality of life of caregivers of seniors, lighten their daily workload and ensure that they take full advantage of the resources at their disposal.

We have a strong presence throughout Quebec, thanks to 17 regional Appui offices and a specific agreement for the Cree Territory of James Bay. Each regional office supports local organizations promoting caregivers’ well-being and providing services adapted to their needs.

Each region manages its own fund and invests in a variety of direct services for caregivers of older adults.
