New public computers rolling out at branches

Patrons will soon be able to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint at the library, as part of a roll out of new public computers.

This year, Vancouver Island Regional Library is phasing in new computers and software at all of its 39 branches. The changes are meant to improve the public's experience on library computers, including by allowing them to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. They'll also see features like accessible USB drives, height adjustable stands, and the ability to save files to the desktop, My Documents or download folder.

New computers are already at the Nanaimo Wellington, Sooke, Sidney/North Saanich and Cowichan branches. Port Hardy, Port McNeil, Ladysmith, Chemainus, Tofino, Ucluelet and Port Alberni are expected to get new computers in early November.

While the computers are being installed, please be aware that there could be limited, or no, computer services.

New literacy kits support military families

Parents facing deployment can now tap into a new library resource to help their families.

The Military Family Resource Centre and librarians at our Sooke library have teamed up to create special literacy kits, packed with resources to support families affected by work-related absences and deployment or relocation.

Literacy kits can be borrowed by any library cardholder and are full of resources like books, CDs, and toys that are vetted by librarians and focused on a different topics like yoga, divorce, wild animals and planes.

Marina Griffin, librarian, said absence/ deployment and relocation/posting are topics that affect families in the Vancouver Island Regional Library area, which includes CFB Esquimalt and CFB Comox.

“Our service areas also include many adults with work-related absences due to employment with the Coast Guard, BC mainland fire services, and Alberta’s oil sands, which makes readers’ advisory services a valued resource for these families as well," she said.

The absence and relocation/moving literacy kits are currently at the Sooke branch, but can be borrowed by any library user.
