Economic Update - Q1

Clean Energy

Low-Carbon Leadership tour and community event.

On January 16th, the Community Energy Association (CEA) and multiple partner organizations collaborated to showcase low carbon/climate leadership in Northern BC in conjunction with the BC natural Resources Forum. This annual Forum in Prince George annually attracts more than 1000 people, including officials from Government and communities from all over Northern BC.

This in-person event provided a platform for northern community officials to build relationships, learn about community-based examples of leadership, and access to organizations that can provide funding and technical capacity.

Two activities were organized and presented during the conference; a "low-carbon leadership tour" of a number of sites around Prince George, and a subsequent event that included a panel discussion and opportunities for networking and capacity building.

Partnership with GeoscienceBC on CCS study for Nechako Basin

A new Geoscience BC geological carbon capture and storage (CCS) project will assess potential for storing carbon emissions in parts of central and northern British Columbia. The project will provide essential public and foundational geological research needed to inform a transition to a net-zero emissions economy.

Geoscience BC is bringing together a consortium of government, industry and other partners for the first phase of a Central Interior Geological CCS Assessment program. The project will compile existing geoscience information on the extensive Nechako Basin, focusing south-southwest of Prince George and providing carbon sequestration insights along the Highway 16 corridor west to Houston, BC.

Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation Josie Osborne said: “B.C. is a leader in creating sustainable energy solutions, and Geoscience BC’s project provides the research we need to continue moving towards a low-carbon future. Carbon capture, utilization and storage are expected to play a key role to help us transition to a net-zero emissions economy, while providing good jobs for people and protecting our environment.”

Hydrogen Hub expansion to include northern BC communities

The Northern BC Hydrogen Hub is a consortium of communities that are supporting the hydrogen sector from production projects by companies like Fortescue, Mitsubishi Power, Hydra Energy, and Teralta, CO2Lock CCS and the Port of Prince Rupert, and end users like the heavy transportation sector, forest products, and fleet operations.

Prince George is an ideal community to kickstart the development of a Central BC Hydrogen Hub due to its central location, industrial activity and workforce, and transportation infrastructure connected to the Prince Rupert Port, as well as to Edmonton and its Edmonton Regional Hydrogen Hub.

The group has been working to promote the Hub and attract investment through attendance at internation trade shows, speaker opportunities with Invest Canada and multiple channels of marketing materials. There will be a Hydrogen Summit in Prince George to further the knowledge of the hydrogen sector in BC that all communities will be attending.

Conference Attendance

North American Green Hydrogen Conference - Seattle, Washington

The year kicked off strong at the 'North American Green Hydrogen Conference' in Seattle, where the Northern BC Hydrogen Hub was an exhibitor to over 300 delegates. The audience indluded potential industrial hydrogen users, energy suppliers, project developers, investors and government officials from across Canada and the United States. During the conference, Deklan Corstanje, Manager of Economic Development in Prince George, was a keynote speaker alongside Paul Vendittelli, Director of Economic Development and Tranportation in Prince Rupert. The pair spoke to the individual communities strengths and the benefits of our regions geographical location as well as the recently completed 'Permitting Case Study'.

CERAWeek - Houston, Texas

CERAWeek 2024 explored strategies for a multidimensional, multispeed and multifuel energy transition. The drive for energy transition is reshaping the competitive landscape for companies and countries – creating new opportunities and risks across the energy value chain. The imperative to reduce emissions has grown in urgency. Yet expectations of a simple linear global transition have been shaken as climate goals compete with concerns over how to deliver economic growth while ensuring energy security, energy access, and affordability. The multidimensional energy transition reflects different realities and timelines by region, technology, industry strategies, the variety of social and political approaches and divergent national priorities in an increasingly multipolar world.

During the conference, Manager of Economic Development, Deklan Corstanje was a speaker in a ‘Doing business in Canada’ seminar, hosted by the Consulate of Canada in Houston. The seminar was used for municipalities to promote their energy investment value proposition to help attract foreign direct investment.
