ACTIVITY GUIDE

2025 Recruit Graduation

Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) is proud to announce that our 21 new firefighters officially graduated on February 21, 2025, with the new members joining the ranks of the NFR Operations Division effective February 24, 2025. Twenty firefighters were hired as part of the NFR Master Plan, and one firefighter was hired due to retirement.

With the addition of these new firefighters, NFR will be able to staff another front-line fire truck with four firefighters. This enhanced capacity strengthens public safety during large emergencies, such as earthquakes, wildfires, high-rise and commercial fires, as well as situations where NFR is responding to multiple incidents simultaneously. This is particularly important considering that NFR responds to more than 30 emergencies daily, in addition to performing inspections, public safety tasks, and training across multiple disciplines. NFR operates 24/7, 365 days a year, handling incidents ranging from structure fires and vehicle fires to technical rescues, ice rescues, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, sinkholes, and even rescuing family pets when needed. These new recruits will further bolster our ability to respond to a wide variety of emergencies and ensure optimal readiness to support our community when they need help the most.

RECRUITMENT

Are you prepared?

The City encourages everyone to be ready for everything from fires and earthquakes to storms and power outages.

Following a disaster, you may need to:

  • Stay at home with an emergency kit or
  • Leave immediately with a grab-and-go bag

Follow the basic supply lists below to build your kits. On a tight budget? Here are some tips on how to prepare for emergencies on a budget.

For more information visit the Province of BC's website.
