BMS Peer Mentorship Session #4: VISA, JRNL, and Work From Home Tips!
February 1st, 2020, 4:00-5:00PM (PST) on Zoom 

Hey First-year BMS students!

Welcome back! We’re so excited to share that your BMS Peer & Academic Mentors are back for Term 2!

On Monday, February 1st, your peer mentors Ky and Katherine will hold a virtual mentorship session packed with helpful information on your current BMS Core Courses - VISA 110 and JRNL 100A. They’ll also share tried and true tips on working from home – including how to stay productive, healthy, and social!

If you have any questions about VISA, JRNL, or study tips beforehand, please submit them through the link below and they’ll answer them at the session. You may also freely ask questions and resolve ambiguities during the Q&A near the end of the session.

Podcasting the Dissertation: A Presentation by Anna Williams and Judith Pascoe

Dr. Anna Williams will present on her scholarly podcast, “My Gothic Dissertation”, followed by a discussion with her doctoral supervisor, Dr. Judith Pascoe.

PostSecret and the Pandemic: Struggles, Successes, & Strategies
January 28, 2021, 3:30-4:30 PM (PST)

67% of young people talk with a friend about mental illness before a parent, teacher or professional. This presentation is organized to give students the confidence and knowledge to know how to respond when a friend trusts them with their mental health secret. In addition, participants will learn from new pandemic related postcards that Frank has received recently.

Walk for Joy
Registration Deadline: February 1st, 2021

Walk for Joy (formerly known as Walkabout) is an annual 9-week walking challenge that strives to promote regular physical activity in social settings. This year, the name of the program has been changed from its original “Walkabout” to commemorate Dr. Butler. Numerous community partners provide prizes for Walk for Joy participants and those who complete extra challenges!

Walk for Joy is open to all UBC students, staff, faculty, and community members. Read more about it below.

John Howes Lecture in Japanese Studies: Nouvelle Japonisme: Le Samouraï (1967) and Jean-Pierre Melville’s Cinematic Japan

This year’s 2020/21 John Howes Lecture takes place virtually, featuring guest speaker Professor Daisuke Miyao of UC San Diego. Focusing on Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samouraï, the talk examines what Melville’s allusion to the samurai seeks to signify.

Through the Lens: I Am Because You Are vs I Am Because You’re Not

Led by experienced community leaders, Through the Lens aims to provoke meaningful conversations on issues of identity, diversity, equity and inclusion.In this workshop, we will examine “glocal” resistance to white supremacy/ capitalism/ patriarchy and talk about the role of narrative in creating characters that play within identity politics.

Brushes and Buchanan – Deadline Extended!
Submission Deadline: February 29th, 2021

Unleash your creativity and design an art installation piece to engage the community in a conversation around a sustainable future on the topic of UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

16 designs will be chosen and students have the opportunity to paint the Buchanan pillars!

Submission Deadline: April 1st, 2021

Digital infrastructure interconnects our city and building services. Participants in each area are invited to propose ‘lead themes’. Proposed themes include: computational design, the digital city, smart buildings,  sociology of the city, and more.
