UPCOMING EVENTS

UBC Thrive
(Undergraduates & Graduates)

Monday, November 1, 2021 - Tuesday, November 30, 2021

UBC Thrive is here! This November is a time when we come together as a UBC community to learn about, talk about, and explore ways to support our mental health. We’re all in different places, whether we’re working and learning from home or on campus, and the past 18 months have presented many new challenges and changes. It is important for each of us to learn to foster and maintain mental health—for ourselves, and for others—and to make sure we have the skills and resources to cope with life’s ups and downs.

The School has many faculty members whose research focus is on exercise and mental health. Most recently, Dr. Eli Puterman led a study about the benefits of exercise in reducing depression symptoms and discussed it with Simi Sara on her show, Mornings with Simi. Click here to listen to the full interview.

The School of Kinesiology works with UBC Wellbeing and other UBC faculties and units to contribute to the educational materials and events offered throughout the month. We hope that you, our students, can take time to reflect on your mental health needs both at school and at home. The School has compiled a list of tips and mental health organizations on its website which you can access here.

Thrive is for everyone: we all deal with our mental health, and while it might look and feel different for each of us, we all benefit from maintaining and fostering it. Whatever your pathway to mental health may be, we invite you to learn about it, talk about it and explore it during Thrive.

EVENT RECAP

The Rainforest Trail Run 2021

On September 27th, over 200 runners and walkers braved the rains to participate in the 2nd Annual Rainforest Trail Run at the urban rainforest of Central Park, in Burnaby, B.C., in the name of truth, reconciliation, and hope. The event, which aims to honor Indigenous culture and history, was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The inaugural Rainforest Trail Run was held in 2019 with great support from the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, and Recreational Council (I-SPARC). We are delighted to say that the event proceeded as one of the first in-person running events to occur in British Columbia. Likewise, the warmth and happiness of the participants at being able to gather together to participate in a healthy outdoor activity were palpable!

The UBC School of Kinesiology is proud to be a strong supporter of the event and saw numerous faculty, staff, and students participate. Dr. Robert Boushel, Dr. Shannon Bredin, Dr. Rosalin Miles, and Dr. Darren Warburton were some of the many UBC attendees at the event. Rosalin Miles drummed her way through the rainforest and went on to win the 5km run! To read more about the run and the winners, click below.
