FireSmart on Private Land Program

The Quesnel Fire Mitigation Project has wrapped up after 2 successful seasons! The City of Quesnel partnered with Nazko First Nation on a successful program to help seniors and other vulnerable homeowners conduct activities such as: clearing debris, moving woodpiles, cleaning gutters, and pruning tree branches and shrubs. Over 55 properties have been assessed and treated around Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District. We would like to thank the funder Community Resilience Investment Program for their generous support!

New Wildfire Management Tool

The Province (MOF and BCWS) has created a new wildfire management tool that shows all of the fuel management activities (historic, current and planned) in the Region on a map. The tool is designed as a “snap-shot” of where we are now, and will eventually be used for tactical planning. This tool will dove-tail with the Community Forest and the Forest Landscape Plan (FLP) currently under development in Quesnel. City of Quesnel Mayor and Council will be receiving a presentation on May 10 about the new tool. Stay tuned for more details!

May is FireSmart Month!

During the month of May, the City of Quesnel’s Forestry Initiatives Program is encouraging residents to participate in FireSmart Awareness Month. FireSmart Awareness Month is designed to bring awareness and highlight the importance of FireSmart-ing homes and properties. The FireSmart Program helps property owners reduce the risk of wildfire damage to their home and property as well as their surrounding neighbours. It’s essential to be proactive in reducing the risk of wildfire damage to property. Whether doing regular yard maintenance or making large scale changes during renovations or landscaping, residents can make choices that will help protect their home from wildfire!

Enter to Win!

During the month of May, residents can enter for a chance to win a $100 gift card to a local business by visiting one of our information booths and learning about FireSmart. You can find us at: the Arts and Recreation Centre; Quesnel Farmer’s Market on May 7 and May 14; the Quesnel Outdoor Tradeshow on May 28; and various other locations around town.
