This week...

Beban Park pool opens today, your input is desired on Te'Tuxwtun and Design Commercial projects and extra waste collection continues. Read on for more!

Extra Collection Continues

This week we will be continuing to collect extra garbage and recycling to make up for missed collection since Christmas Day (extra recycling on recycling days and extra garbage on garbage days).

Wondering how we’re handling the extra materials? On our recycling routes, we’ve got five trucks on the go, each with an extra worker for the day. When the automated truck empties each blue cart, the extra recyclables are then manually dumped into the empty blue cart for a second tipping. On our garbage routes, we have four of our City trucks collecting from the black and green carts, as usual. To handle the extra garbage bag that some homes put out, we have two dump trucks (each with two operators) working the routes and manually tossing the garbage.

We expect collection days to be longer than usual, and crews may need to work into the evenings. Please keep your carts and extras out until collected. Also note that additional garbage (on your garbage day) is being picked up by a separate crew and truck so it is important the extra bag is placed 1 metre beside or behind the cart.

The Regional District of Nanaimo has extended free garbage drop-off until Friday, Jan 21, for the residents living in the collection zones that have their collection cancelled or delayed.

Pool Update

As of today, January 17, the main 25-metre tank at Beban Park Pool is open. There have been several improvements including new tiling in the washrooms, LED lighting upgrades, water-efficient taps and overall painting found throughout the facility. In addition, an accessibility audit was completed last year that should help the City of Nanaimo determine ways to enhance everyone's ability to access the pool amenities found at Beban Park.

For those who haven't visited Beban Park Pool in awhile, Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun, a Coast Salish artist, was commissioned to create large-scale murals that were unveiled last fall. These feature the movement of the dog salmon run and the ecosystems sustained by the herring run and the eelgrass. Creatures, including littleneck clams, sea lion, bald eagle, octopus and others, appear in his designs. Interactive and interpretive signage with English and Hul’q’umi’num words and a take-away guide is available to share information, language and stories related to the artwork.

Just a reminder, the City is following current Provincial Health Orders and operating at 50% capacity. The 3-7 pm time slot at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre fills up quickly. If you are able to come in the morning or evening sessions there is less of a chance of being turned away due to capacity levels. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
