 Turning Our Commitment into Action

Foundations of Anti-Racism: Module 1 - now available online

Module 1: Foundations for Action is a mandatory 45-minute online learning module designed to provide staff with a foundational understanding of the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic racism in Canada.

Adapted from the first module of the four-hour in-person training, this introductory course explores how these systems continue to shape the experiences and health outcomes of Indigenous, Black, and other racialized communities.

These topics will be explored in greater depth in Module 2, helping learners build the knowledge needed to take meaningful action toward equity, inclusion, and culturally safer services.

All three modules will continue to be available in-person in select locations and by special request.

 Recognition and Appreciation

November 5 is International Volunteer Managers Day

Today we recognize this special day honoring the passion and commitment of our Volunteer Services leaders who coordinate and inspire our volunteer workforce and create positive impacts across our organization.

At the heart and core of their work is the ability to foster relationships not only in a health care environment but community as well.  In addition to traditional volunteer programing, Volunteer Services partners and provides support to other SHA services and programs like Forever in Motion, Medical First Responders, Living Well with Chronic Conditions and Spiritual Care.

Did you know?

  • SHA has five Volunteer Managers and 27 Volunteer Coordinators across the province with thousands of registered volunteers.
  • Volunteer Managers follow national standards as directed by the Canadian Code of Volunteer Involvement.
  • Volunteer leaders collaborate and foster relationships with staff and volunteers in SHA facilities to help make a positive impact in the lives of residents, families, patients, and staff.
  • Volunteer Management is a certified profession.  This training helps ensure that we are developing processes and programs in SHA that align with the national standards.

November is Fall Prevention Month

Please review the weekly posters with your teams. This weekโ€™s poster is the Six Pillars: Fall Prevention and Injury Reduction Program. SHAโ€™s goal is to reduce the amount of patient falls and fall related injuries. The foundation of each program is based on the six pillars.

 Staff Information

Reporting Incidents of Violence

Violence can take many forms and result in different types of harm, including physical, psychological, social, cultural and environmental.

Always take any urgent action that is required to restore safety in the moment. Once safety is restored, complete a patient safety incident or a staff safety report, depending on who was harmed or at risk of harm. In some cases, both reports will need to be completed.

Where to Report Violent Incidents:

  • Patient safety incident report: Patient Safety & Experience
    • When a patient/resident/client was harmed, directly threatened, communicated that they felt unsafe, or were at risk of harm if there had not been intervention.
    • A patient safety report includes the name of the person that was harmed or at risk of harm. The person with violent behavior does not have a report completed for them unless they were also harmed
  • Staff safety report: Staff Safety Reporting
    • When a staff member was harmed or at risk of harm.

eHealth - EDRN updates improve how records can be printed, saved and shared

Enhancements to the Electronic Death Registration and Notification (EDRN) system will allow users to print a confirmation of death. This new function ensures users can meet internal and record keeping requirements without losing the convenience and ease of creating and managing those records electronically through EDRN.

Watch for updates to the existing training resources on the eHealth website with information about how to save and share records.

EDRN is a secure online system used to register deaths in Saskatchewan. EDRN helps protect the accuracy of death information, supports timely completion of death records, and improves processing times for death certificates.

Do Not Use Abbreviations Audit

The SHA Do Not Use Abbreviations Audit audit for Continuing Care has been updated.

This audit is required annually (or more frequently for areas of concern) for all SHA Continuing Care facilities based on the Accreditation Canada Medication Management Standards for organizational practice, as well as SHA requirements to align with available Medication Management Policy and procedures.

The targeted timeline for implementation of the updated tool is as soon as possible. Please refer to the Do Not Use Abbreviations Audit SHA Work Standard and Audit Tool.

Questions can be directed to your local Medication Use and Safety Interdisciplinary Committee (MUSIC).
