About Squamish Water Restrictions

Wondering why Squamish water restrictions are different from Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland?

It’s because the Ring Creek Aquifer is the source of regular drinking water for the community. While the aquifer is reliant on glacier melt and snowmelt primarily, the changes in snowpack take longer to show up in our water supply, whereas surface water storage, which is what Vancouver has, is more reliant on the yearly snowpack to feed their water system.

Our water restrictions are in place to:

  • Meet peak summertime demands.
  • Help maintain stream flow for spawning salmon
  • Ensure adequate water supply is available in the event of a fire or other emergency.
  • Manage the pumping and storage capacity of the water supply and distribution system.
  • Delay (or even avoid) costly water system upgrades.

So, remember: As temperatures rise, be water wise! Learn more about water conservation at squamish.ca/water.

Wildlife WednesdayWeekly Recap

Western Toads are on the Move!

Squamish may be bear country, but it is also home to thousands of tiny western toadlets that have just begun their annual mass migration.

These cute little amphibians are heading up into the forests of Garibaldi Highlands, crossing many of the trails in that area. Later in the summer, they will also be migrating around Alice Lake Provincial Park, Lucille Lake and Whistler’s Lost Lake.

Western Toads are a yellow listed species in B.C., which means they are protected under the British Columbia Wildlife Act. Toadlets tend to be most active at dusk and dawn. Please give them space, and whatever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THE TOADS! Residue from our skin can harm them.

How you can help keep them safe:

  • Drive slowly near wetlands, ponds, and known migration routes
  • Watch for signage and temporary detours in high‑movement areas
  • Avoid biking or walking through clusters of toadlets on trails or roads
  • Keep pets close to prevent accidental harm
  • Report large groups to help local monitoring efforts

These toadlets may be tiny, but together they play a huge role in our local ecosystem. For more info, go to squamishenvironment.ca/projects/western-toad-monitoring-project.
